Ever like the Movie Better than the Book?
Here is an older thread I had going if you want to check it out. I felt the same way with Princess Bride. Maybe becuase I saw the movie first, and fell in love with it.. and the book just pales in comparision to it!

Thanks! I went back in the General folder until May but didn't see any topics which looked like what I wanted to post.
The older thread reminded me of so many movie/book adaptations I didn't even remember. I think now I need to create a new booklist on my GR page "Seen-the-movie-read-the-book" or something like that!
That's funny...I have a thread with that name. I can't think of any books that I didn't like after seeing the movie first. I'll have to put that question on the back burner for awhile.
Julianne, the only reason I went back in search of that thread was becuase of how uncanny it was that you said exactly what I said about Princess Bride. Great minds think alike, eh???
:)
:)

I was just surprised not to learn anything more from the Princess Bride. There was so little there that wasn't readily adapted to the movie. Oh, well! I'm glad to have read it anyway.

I know what you mean about The Princess Bride. I did like the book but the movie did such a great job of bringing the characters to life that it was hard to adjust to the changes.
I also kind of liked the movie "Hannibal" better than the book, the ending in the book was ridiculous and I was so glad they changed it for the movie.
Sometimes what happens to me is that once I see the movie I have a new appreciation for the book. It's like seeing the two together change how I felt after just reading the book. This happened with White Oleander and with Little Children.

Usually the movies aren't remotely as good as the books. I am now a bit nervous to read Princess Bride and How to Make an American Quilt.
My Teenager loved the move Pratical Magic she said the book was horrible. I am still planning on reading the book.

Symarillion is extremely difficult read. Most of it is notes from Tolkein but finished by his son, who in my opinion wasn't as brilliant as his father. I actually really liked the Lord of the Ring movies, but still liked the books better.

Oh, no! I'm reading Practical Magic right now! I haven't seen the movie in years and I only remember the basics of the story(and Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman of course are now engrained in my memory as Sally and Gillian). I don't think the story so far (I'm about 1/2 way through)in the movie is very similar to the book.
We'll see...
I need to read it too, but my daughter was just so upset and usually she thinks the books are better then movies. Let me know your thoughts when your done.

Oh and the chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Rachael McAdams!! steamy!

Sarah, I completely agree with your thoughts on The Notebook.

Practical Magic the book is very different from the movie but I liked it. The movie is more over the top of course and sillier but I enjoyed them both. I read the book several years before seeing the movie though so I had enough distance not to be totally annoyed.

I also couldn't finish reading Tuscan Sun and the book that followed it. I bought them because I enjoyed the movie so much! I prefer Mayle's book A Year In Provence

Dee Marie

Mandy I loved the books I read them first way before the series but so love the series as well.I just love Michael Hall.I have since Six Feet Under and think he does an excellent job as Dexter.I did not enjoy the 3rd book as much as the other 2 though. Will see how #4 goes.

I read the Notebook before the movie and was disappointed in how they decided to end it (the movie, that is). So that left a bad taste in my mouth and I preferred the book--but I still bawled at the end of both. With my current feelings on Sparks' female characterization, I don't know if I would like the book anymore.
I haven't read the LOTRs, but I would be interested to someday.
Emilee, I'll give you my take on Practical Magic when I'm all done.

The movies, on the other hand, have been a pleasure to watch.

Empire Falls rocked. Both movie and book.

Was Gerard Butler's accent really fake? I thought he had some accent in 300. I haven't read The Notebook but didn't enjoy another Sparks book I read so I am hestitant to pick it up. Loved the movie though. And loved the McAdams/Gosling pairing.

aha! Well, at least he is closer than an American trying to fake the brogue. :)

As a general rule I always like the book better than the movie. Until now. I LOVE the movie, Like the book. I don't feel like I got anything new out of reading the book. I don't know if it's b/c Goldman wrote the screenplay, too, and just made both so similar, or I didn't like his writing style (pretty choppy and poor character development), or what.
So, I was curious. Does anyone have a similar experience. Where you read the book and saw the movie and actually preferred the movie?
