Teresa (teresa_bowen) The Little Sister The Little Sister by Raymond Chandler

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I first read this book over twenty years ago. It has remained with me ever since and this re-reading has just confirmed it as one of the best books I have ever read. Raymond Chandler makes the English language sing. It is putty in his hands and he moulds it into sounds and shapes that captivate the imagination and send shivers down my backbone. This is one of the few times I wished I had the ebook version rather than a hardback book as so often I found myself wanting to highlight and share a sentence, a passage, a paragraph. Wanting to grab people and say 'read this it's brilliant'.

The story, what's it about? A girl approaches a private detective and asks for help in finding her missing brother. The girl and her brother are both willing to blackmail their elder sister who is an up and coming film actress whose taste in boyfriends is questionable. A lot of people end up dead. A photograph seems to hold a vial clue but who really took the picture? There are layers upon layers in this novel exploring human nature and how we chose to use others or be used by them. After everything else is exhausted this story still remains as a simple, fast paced, unputdownable read.

If you haven't read it yet go do so as quickly as you can get hold of a copy.

I feel like it's a book that parents should read. It had a lot of good points in it. The first half was a bit too "not detailed" but I really liked the last few chapters.

Pretty amazing book. Much better than his other book "Blink".

One of those books which change how you view the world.

Specials (Uglies, #3) by Scott Westerfeld

my review

I can't believe that I've actually finished the third book in this series. It's so satisfying.

I longed to know more about the Specials since the first time I read about them. They sounded really intriguing. I was not disappointed. It is another fast-paced story and very well done.

Teresa (teresa_bowen) Gone Gone by Mo Hayder

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I get audio books from the the library to help pass the time on the daily commute. When I find myself sitting in the car in the driveway 15 minutes after arriving home because I am totally caught up in the story and need to know what happens next then I know I have picked a good story. When I borrowed this audiobook I didn't realise it was part of a series but that didn't matter the story works as a stand alone book, although I now want to go and get all the other books in the series.

DI Jack Caffery is investigating a carjacking. As he looks into it he realises that the jacker was not after the car but wanted the passenger, an eleven year girl. A few days later it happens again. But this time it's a four yea old girl. The jacker seems to always be one step ahead of the police and no one can workout how he gets his information. Set in the west country between Bath and Bristol it was interesting to listen to descriptions of places I know.

I did work out who did it quite early on but one of the best things about this book was that it kept making me doubt myself. I throughly enjoyed this story and will be back for more about Jack Caffey et al as soon as I ge back to the library.

Ahmad (baubaid) The Magic of Thinking Big
David J. Shwartz
4/5

Self-development books can get BORING sometimes without much to add.

But this book is kind of different. It's simple, easy to read, no psychological mumbo-jumbo you won't feel. Very applicable, and I like the way the authors explains and gives views on things. Most make pretty good sense to me.

To be honest, this book to me is like a summary of all possible self-development books (minus a few, of course).

Rebecca Herman (beccadeesbookshelf) City of Fallen Angels (The Mortal Instruments, #4) by Cassandra Clare

Cassandra Clare
5/5

Once again Cassandra Clare has written another great book in the Mortal Instruments series. I enjoyed the different and new relationships and how she was able to flesh out some of the minor characters. Major cliff hanger at the end, which always stresses me out! Can't wait for the next installment!

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

Started off boring, but as soon as the Games started I couldn't leave the book! And, god, didn't the last page FUCKING freaked the shit outta me.

I won't rate it until I read the last book.

Norwegian Wood Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was my first Murakami, and I absolutely loved it.
My favorite elements in this book were the writing, and the impressions and thoughts of its characters. However, I didn't find myself very interested in the main story (it was, after all, a complicated love story and nothing more); despite that, I was disappointed in the ending. Perhaps I expected something more since it didn't come to a full circle with the beginning.
I regret waiting this long (3 months on my shelf) to read it, but at least now I know that Murakami is a wonderful author and that I should read the rest of his books without hesitation.

One of the best foreign literature I have ever read. A splendid portrait of youth and old age.

The transition of the story plot is flawless. I highly recommend it.

I'll quote The Times review "An excellent cop novel full of action, good dialogue, well-crafted characters and an authentic backdrop"

This is my first cop novel to read and I loved it. I grew fond of the characters so much. Definitely worth reading.

Great piece of fluff. I loved all the characters, from Cassie to Jack to her wacky friends (Marc with a C, anyone?) to the plot and the ending. It's been a while since I enjoyed a protagonist as much as I did Cassie, she was a great breath of fresh air.

If you like chick-lit, pick up this book. You won't be disappointed.

The Moral Landscape How Science Can Determine Human Values by Sam Harris
The Moral Landscape: How Science Can Determine Human Values
Sam Harris

The title says it all. Harris argues in this book that science can determine morality and human values. I can understand his approach and I think it'll raise a lot of questions and debates.

message 24: by Linah (new)

Linah (liiiinahhh) oer certainly has a way of getting an idea across. I really enjoyed his style of writing but no so much the plot, although it was unexpected and unusual. The book had its grim parts and it really touched on the emotional aspect of 9/11.

Overall, pretty enjoyable especially the narration of the different characters.

My review.

A very light book with only three short stories. A cd was enclosed with the book. I actually bought it to improve my listening skills. I didn't know there were practices at the end of the book. I answered just a few!
