I've finally managed to catch up on my reading with this (after spending about two months diddling around not doing it) and I have to say it's a bit...
Well, not to bag on Carl Sagan (who is now sadly gone, RIP,) but I feel this is one of those sci-fi books that lean toward the 'hard' category, meaning you either have to be really smart and understand the subject manner or you have to enjoy having to look things up dozens upon dozens of times (which I personally feel, as both a reader and a writer, is jarring to say the least.) I hit page 300 tonight and things have picked up a bit, but most of those 300 pages were spent with A) lots of meetings B) technological mumbo-jumbo or C) personal interactions with the characters that seem to be put in just to make characterization (meaning they don't really flow so well.)
I plan on continuing with the book, but I'd be interested to hear you all's feedback on it.
I read it back when the movie came out, and I remember enjoying it. What types of things do you feel you have to look up? What types of technological mumbo-jumbo are there? My memory is hazy.
This is definitely on my TBR shelf. I have a science background--more biological than technological, but I can usually follow along with the hard SF. What's your background, Kody?
