This is probably a YA. I remember reading it in a text book around 8th grade. it was about these kids who collect the little card board cut-out toys from a cereal box. The toys make up a garden-type thing and they end up being able to travel into the garden as if it were a real place. At the end someone throws away their garden while they are playing in it.

I'd guess this is 'The Serial Garden' by Joan Aiken, one of her Armitage Family stories. The children in the stories were called Mark and Harriet. In 'The Serial Garden' Mark was stuck at home (I think) with flu or measles; he cut out a new part of the garden each week from the cereal packet.
