Although I completely understand why it's been so hard for me-great swathes are written in dialect which I hate & have trouble reading (there is a point to it here: when the immigrants speak in their native Yiddish, they are articulate & eloquent; when they have to speak in English, they stumble & seem far less intelligent and articulate than they are. Yet another dislocation not only in their lives but their very selves.
I've wanted to read it because it takes place in the early 20th century, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where my father (whose parents were Jewish immigrants-his father died young & his mother never was fluent in any language but Yiddish) & I just felt this was important for me to read.

Light relief The Seekers.
Shortened working week after our public holiday.
Always busy, and this week possibly in control!

halfway through the sensualist

Ellie I remember slogging through Call It Sleep when I was about 16 (a bit more than 20 years ago) and longing for him to wake up!
Ice...catch 22 gets better, and once you get it, becomes more fun I promise
