Two excellent books with a military connection about Alaska. The Thousand-Mile War is the definitive book about the Aleutian Islands Campaign in WWII, and the only occupation of US territory by Japanese forces; and Burning Cold is about the burning and sinking of the cruise ship Prinsendam in the Gulf of Alaska in the early 80s, and the US Coast Guard's miraculous rescue of over three hundred passengers without any loss of life - a rescue I was involved in while serving in the CG at CGAirSta Kodiak, AK.

Red, Brenda Levere has been on her own for a very long time. PR, Paul Revere Jones comes from a big family, part Alaska Native and part white. When Red moves into his apartment complex, PR begins the hunt of a lifetime. He wants the prickly woman. Red throws a big glitch in his plans by getting involved with another man. PR continues his friendly interaction with Red as he bides his time. Reardon dumps Red and PR happily deepens their friendship. But Red is shy having been burned before. It is one tough hunt. Can he get her to the altar or will Red keep him at arms length as a friend with benefits? Meanwhile things in the Copper Basin are becoming increasingly worse for the great-grand parents as incidents of vandalism increase. (less)
