I believe Diana Wynne Jones is pretty well known in the UK, but when it comes to America, I haven't met anyone that has heard of her. Diana's most well known book is probably Howl's Moving Castle, which was made into an animated movie.
Joan Lowery Nixon is another I think that isn't very well known. Her book with the most ratings on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ is The Other Side of Dark and it has 547 ratings. How I discovered Joan Lowery Nixon was through my library's website while I was looking for books to borrow. The first book of hers I ever read was The Haunting and I thought it was great. It has 242 ratings on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ.
Joseph Bruchac is a wonderful writer, but I don't think he is too well known. Skeleton Man, Whisper in the Dark and many of his other books are very good. I also really like his childrens books. The First Strawberries was a nice one.
Oh I have read the First Strawberries Eden and I loved it!! I wanted to check out more books by Joseph Bruchac.

You should check out more books by him. He is a great author.

He is an excellent author, everything I've read by him, I've simply adored. Another wonderful author (A Canadian Métis author) whom I recommend is David Bouchard
You simply must read (and if possible listen to) The Secret of Your Name: Proud to Be Métis, and his picture book Qu'Appelle is equally wonderful and evocative. I also loved If you're not from the prairie... and there are a other picture books by Bouchard about Métis and First Nations culture that are on my to-read list.
