I read a series of books about Irish setters when I was in jr high (1982ish) that are possible re-releases. They are Young Adult reading level.

The first book is a boy who works at the kennels of the dog breeders, and accidentally injures the superstar show dog and therefore runs away from the kennels with the dog to a cabin up in the mountains near the kennel. The Dog's name might have been Sean.

Does anyone recognize this series of books?

Bet it's Jim Kjelgaard (starting with Big Red, I think). I haven't read any of them, but one of my brothers did.

Yeah, I think it's Jim Kjelgaard you're looking for. The second or third in the series has a dog called Sean. It's called Outlaw Red.
