Debbie (dashforcover) Read in the early to mid 60s. Main character is a boy. All I remember is he has gone out to the Mars desert (probably without permission, don't know if anyone knows he has gone). And the sun is going down. He may be lost. There are some huge plants that open during the day and the leaves close at night to protect the plant from the horrid Mars night cold. The boy climbs into the center of the plant, which saves him. This is not the end of the book.

kvon | 56 comments Sounds like Red Planet by Heinlein. From the wikipedia page, "The boys set out to skate the thousands of miles to their homes on the frozen Martian canals. During the trip, Frank gets sick. On the third night, they are forced to take shelter inside a giant Martian cabbage plant (nearly suffocating when it folds up at night)."

I agree Kvon, definately Red Planet. I remember that scene in the book vividly, altho its been several years since the last time that I read the book. I go back periodically and re-read my Heinleins, simply because the man could WRITE. Great story, great action, good characters (altho they all seemed to be male--even the girls act and sound more like boys than girls) Even the dated tech isn't enough to kill the thrill of the stories.

And I have to admit--when I was 13 and read The Moon is a Harsh Mistress for the first time, I fell madly in love with Mike. And that sparked my life long love of computers.

Debbie (dashforcover) Thank you so much. I hope someday I can help someone find a book they are seeking!
