HomeInMyShoes | 2749 comments I liked Accordion Crimes which I read this year. The Shipping News is a great story and a pretty good movie as well. My library has access across the province so I just request stuff. I've only found a couple of books that I can't get access to, but it's all paper having a Kindle in Canada.

I was really hoping for Modern Lit or Free for All. Most of what I read doesn't fit into genre or Classic.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments lately I've only been interested in trashy genre or nonfiction.

message 253: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2749 comments I've read lots of that this year too. 4 Robert Asprin, and I think I'm on number 9 for Terry Pratchett.

HomeInMyShoes | 2749 comments Plus four Young Wizards titles and a few Information Architecture books.

I've only read The Shipping News and I thought that was great. I also really liked the movie.

I would certainly be open to more of her work and I agree with you. Modern Lit would be great as a book club option.

HomeInMyShoes | 2749 comments Not that this has anything to do with my reading challenge, but why do cookbooks mix measuring styles...

1 pound flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup beef suet
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
8 oz iced water
a pinch of tomato colouring in water

Liquid ounces, dry pounds (of flour no less) cups of mushy oils...

Hated pet peeve of mine. I have a converter app for my phone for just that reason.

HomeInMyShoes | 2749 comments I'm trying to figure out what to bring to the office holiday potluck. I'm thinking Jamaican patties. Should I make them spicy or tame?

What she said!!

message 260: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2749 comments I love the patties too. Scotch peppers are rather difficult to come by here, but I do have a few jalapenos and other hot peppers on hand. Probably make them next weekend. I'll probably go for a medium heat.

I keep habaneros in the freezer (I know, I know. It's wrong but I got a pint for $5!)

message 262: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2749 comments ^Lol. I keep some in the freezer as well. They lose a bit of zing, but you can always substitute quantity at that point. :)

Ginger in the freezer works great. It grates on the microplane into a really fine paste without the stringyness you get with ginger sometimes.

Thanks for that. I'm going to note that down for future reference.

HomeInMyShoes | 2749 comments I've been cooking for the last five hours. What was I making again? O_O

message 265: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 437 comments Happiness? :)

message 266: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2749 comments Sort of. But it was mainly just doing stuff organizing for the week. Although supper was spectacular. I should have taken pictures. Chicken sous vide (cooking method) with some home made paleo-friendly barbecue sauce, spaghetti squash and green beans.

Oooooh!

I made a Turkey Stew and an Tomato soup with smoked paprika and bacon this weekend.

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 437 comments Mmmm! That sounds delicious. My diet is pretty strict so I may or may not be able to eat such a dish, but it certainly sounds marvellous.

Restricted diets suck. :-(

I'm not supposed to have coffee... (but I've had some two days in a row O_o)

message 271: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 437 comments Mine is a non-sugar diet so coffee is fine as long as I use a stevia-based sweetener.

Love my coffee.

I have a Saturday/Sunday morning ritual with coffee that I look forward to all week.

That sounds tasty (except the sugar part).

I'm not supposed to have caffeine very often (damn near at all). It also helps cysts and stuff like that grow (caffeine).

message 273: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2749 comments I drink my coffee black. Always have. Makes that part of life a lot easier. I only drink about 2 cups a day now too. Then I switch to herbal things like peppermint or echinachea 'tea'.

message 274: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 437 comments I don't drink my coffee black - but I drink it strong. I only have 1 coffee a day, but it's a triple shot. :)

I have this awesome routine, where I brew my coffee in my stovetop espresso (Moka express), aerate my milk using a coffee plunger and then nuke it to create a lovely rich foam on top.

Then I prepare my large mug of coffee, grab my very dark sugar free chocolate and head off to the library where I sip my coffee, eat my chocolate and read for a couple of hours with my cat curled up in my lap.

I feel like a king! And people pretty much know not to disturb me on weekend mornings except by prior arrangement. This is a sacred time and I will not answer my phone or respond kindly to my partner's badgering. :D

message 275: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2749 comments I have a three-year old. At least now we can play by the fire and I enjoy my coffee on the weekend mornings playing cars. Some day I'll be able to read again.

message 276: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2749 comments Book number 80! Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett.

message 277: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2749 comments Finally. Book number 81. Douglas Coupland's Miss Wyoming.

A solid title. Only two books completed in December so far. I guess I'm easing up to rest up for next year's challenge.

I've been working on a doorstopper that...is killing me! 200 pages in and NOTHING has happened. I want to scream. But I need to finish the dang book.

message 279: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2749 comments I'm glad I moved away from doorstopper series books. 200 is rather far for nothing. Has the main character been introduced?

message 280: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Blake (caleb72) | 437 comments Still on the prologue I bet. :)

Ummm, most of them...I think?

The person everyone is up in arms about has been introduced but only as a series of italicized paragraphs every so often sprinkled here and there.

If there are more MCs...no.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Caleb wrote: "Still on the prologue I bet. :)"

To be honest, it feels like the dang prologue. All around the mulberry bush...

message 283: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2749 comments Are there more than six characters? Can you name them without looking them up?

message 284: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2749 comments A couple more titles to round out the year.

Ethan Frome which was good.

The Wizard's Dilemma, number five of the Young Wizard's series by Diane Duane. Just gets better and better. But time for a quick break before settling into 2013. Just got The Cool War from the library ready to start in the new year.
