Slayermel | 664 comments Wow, that felt so weird to write 2012 already!
Welcome to the new year, let's see what your plans are

The shelf for this month is Speculative Fiction

message 2: by LynnB (last edited Dec 21, 2011 09:35PM) (new)

LynnB | 1760 comments I found that I already have The Sparrow and Something Rotten on my TBR list, so I am going to start with those two.

I just finished When She Woke which is also on the list -- but wrong shelf month :(

I'm thinking I will start with Catching Fire and Leviathan.

Both fit into other challenges for me, which makes them good places to start.

Dee (austhokie) | 2689 comments looking through books I had planned on reading, i found

Leviathan
Blameless
Crossed
11/22/63

were all listed, so those are the planned ones right now...I had started Crossed and 11/22/63, but i'm less than 15% of the way through them, so re-reading won't be too bad

ETA - ohhh i have When She Woke out from the library right now, I might hold off unti the 1st to read it as well

message 5: by Vi (new)

Vi I have

Leviathan
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Doomsday Book
To Say Nothing of the Dog
Uglies
I, Robot
Shades of Grey

on my immediate To-Read list. I'm hoping to get through at least two of them.

message 6: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid | 0 comments There are so many good ones on this list!!

I'm going to start with The Hunger Games. It's been on my list forever.

Once finished I might move on to the next one in the series. Have to see how much time there is left to read all my books for my challenges. :)

message 7: by Candiss (last edited Jan 18, 2012 08:55AM) (new)

Candiss (tantara) These are books I already had queued for reading in January, due to various Books of the Month and group challenges, which also happen to be on this shelf:

- Bones of the Moon - Jonathan Carroll
- Dying Inside - Robert Silverberg
- Dawn by Octavia E. Butler
- The Einstein Intersection - Samuel R. Delany
- Houdini Heart - Ki Longfellow

Omigosh. If I limit myself to books on this shelf on my TBR that I own or already have checked out of the library, or have already committed to read, I still end up with a list of nearly 20. There are 5 just on my LOST list. If I start with those, plus my chain-gang book and my Jan. faculty book club book, I'd read these 7:
The Wanting Seed, Bending the Landscape, Shades of Grey, Child 44, Leviathan, Deadline

But some I've bought or been given reading are calling to me also, especially:
Pathfinder, Eternity

It's interesting to see how many of us have chosen Leviathan. Our choices are usually much more scattered than that.

Perhaps it is because it is a SRC Group Read Choice this season.

message 11: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2689 comments that's what i was going to say :)

message 12: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2689 comments i've got all 5 of mine slotted into SRC tasks

Leviathan - group read
Crossed - orb on the cover
11/22/63 - GR choice award
Blameless - make it work, dress on the cover
When she woke - Indiebound

I found another one - Seventh Son. It also is slotted for SRC, so add it to my to be read list for January.

message 15: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 192 comments Leviathan is on my list too. Might try to get a Gaiman book read, not sure which one.
Reading Crossed right now - will have to keep orb in mind for SRC :)

LynnB | 1760 comments Blarneygod wrote: "Frankenstein"

I think I might add that one to my list too. I never have read the book, but keep meaning to do so.

Tell me more about SRC? Pick-a-Shelf is the only group with challenges that I've joined on GR. I don't want to join another unless it comes highly recommended. Actually, now that I think about it, I should probably start a new thread with the question.

message 18: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 192 comments SRC is the Seasonal Reading Challenge. Every season (3 months) there is a challenge to read books that fit a certain criteria. It's scored differently in terms of points, but the book picking part is pretty similar to ROAR. I've been thinking about joining it for a while, but this is my first one (Dec-Feb). Check it out, challenges are tons of fun :)

message 19: by KarenF (new)

KarenF (cleocleveland) | 66 comments I skipped a couple of months but it's a new year so I'm back in January.

I've got these lined up for other challenges - SRC, like everyone else apparently :) - so I'll definitely be reading them:

Leviathan (Group Read) and Sandman Slim (Indie Next)

And I'll be listening to:

Small Favor (Favorite Genres) and The Lightning Thief (Book to Movie)

If I have time I'd like to get to:

A Shadow in Summer and Arrows of the Queen

PS - Susan - I just wanted to say that I love the SRC challenge because there are lots of different ways participants can "win" and get to create a task for the next round. It's so interesting to see what all the different players come up with.

message 20: by Katey (new)

Katey (kateyyy) | 50 comments It's been a few a while since I've done a pick a shelf challenge as 2011 was a busy year for me but for one of my goals for 2012 I want to do try and keep up with it the whole year!

I've picked Mockingjay and Divergent.

Good luck everyone!

I know right! My friend recommended it to me and it's been going crazy on goodreads so I can't wait to read it!

It's showing up on many of GR recommendation lists.

message 24: by Tara (new)

Tara | 742 comments I am going to try to read A Game of Thrones...and hopefully a few others... but we will see.

message 25: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1017 comments I'm going to join those who are planning to read Leviathan. I've had it sitting here waiting for me for what feels like forever. Also, Incarceron was picked for me in the Chain Gang.

I would love to get to both of those in January!

message 26: by SandyC (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) Hello! I am new to the group. I will read Flowers for Algernon.

I saw someone was asking about SRC, and I will add my recommendation for that group/challenge. It's fun to see how your books fit in to the tasks, and you also have a chance to be a task-creator in the next go-round.

message 27: by Amy (new)

Amy | 2231 comments Here are a few from my to-read shelf that I hope to complete:

Snow Crash
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
Divergent
Graceling
The Fall

message 28: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel | 664 comments I'm starting with House of Leaves and will see where I go from there.

message 29: by Tina (new)

Tina Hi everyone! It's been a long time :) It's good to see some familiar faces and some new ones too! I'm all set with a new year's resolution to pay attention to my favorite past time again: reading. I've picked out book one of the Game of Thrones series to read this monthA Game of Thrones. It looks like a doorstop, but a good one! Happy New Year!

I didn't put Reamde on my list at first, because I've been on the waiting-list at the library for it for what seems like forever. But my name came up, so it jumps to the top of my list for the month. It's over 1000 pages, which may mean I don't get to many of the others. But from what I can tell so far, it'll be worth it.

message 32: by char (new)

char | 3 comments I am going to read either 1984 or Tomorrow, When the War Began i'm not sure which till I pick it up to read :)

message 33: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel | 664 comments Charmayne, I really enjoyed 1984 it was recommended to me by a friend and it really makes you think about society and where we are headed, especially in regards to our governments and their "Big Brother" methods. ;op I recommend it to anyone!

message 34: by Cathy (new)

Cathy | 90 comments I have the Hunger Games trilogy on my Kindle, so will start with The Hunger Games and see how I go (have read the first few chapters and its got me in already so looking good to keep going!)

Thanks Slayermel :).
1984 piqued my interest a little bit more and now with your comment and recommendation it may have just pushed it over the edge to pick that one!
Can't wait to start! I'm off out to purchase! :)..

I have not yet been able to get Leviathan or Catching Fire from the library. Both are requested but not yet available.

Oops... Forgot I was planning on reading this one. At least I made up by reading two books on the shelf.

message 38: by Mindy (new)

Mindy | 87 comments This is my first read and so I am going to try to read Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. I am leaving it a bit late, but hopefully I will be able to finish it and a couple of others!
