message 2: by Betty (new)

Betty (olderthan18) Yeah, Kimberly. For someone with a sweet tooth, the titles to come will be candies.

message 3: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 253 comments Good start, Kimberly. A word of caution though- making the list can be addictive, I ended up adding 206 books instead of 52. ;)

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments When you finish, I'll add your books to the master list, so maybe comment here when you're done?

message 5: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) Good start Kimberly.

message 6: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 130 comments Thanks :) It's kind of hard to find books for this challenge that are available through the library, I don't plan on buying more than one or two books for this challenge so I've got to be careful with my countries :)

message 7: by Louise (new)

Louise | 120 comments You could try a Karen Blixen book for Denmark - they should be available :-)

Kimberly | 130 comments Louise wrote: "You could try a Karen Blixen book for Denmark - they should be available :-)"

I'm reading her for Kenya :) I own a few of her books.

Thanks Judy, I'm going to work on the list little bit by little bit so I don't burn out or get frustrated. I can't wait to read this one since I've owned it for over a year.

message 10: by Kimberly (last edited Dec 27, 2011 03:30PM) (new)

Kimberly | 130 comments Here's my nifty little picture for my blog that I'll be using for the challenge:

message 11: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) I really like that picture, Kimberley. I wanted to tell you that yesterday but for some reason when you posted it yesterday I was able to view it in my email, but your post with the picture never showed up on the blogging thread. Strange.

message 12: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) Cool picture, Kimberly.

message 13: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 130 comments Anne - I put it up then I removed it because I wanted to add my blog address in the picture. Thank you for liking it :)

Janice- Thanks :)

message 14: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 130 comments So I had a minor fit because my computer froze in the middle of me doing my list I was at #48 and everything from #30 got erased so I had to do it all over again. But for now my list is complete.

message 15: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 130 comments Pragya wrote: "Good start, Kimberly. A word of caution though- making the list can be addictive, I ended up adding 206 books instead of 52. ;)"

Oh my that IS a big list! I'm going to check it out now :)

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments I added your books to the list. A little FYI:
Algiers is in Algeria, so that's where that pick ended up. I have Equitorial Guinea under Guinea (but now I'm confused... Equitorial Guinea... Guinea... Guinea-Bissau... somebody help me unravel that!).

You seem to have a great affinity or knowledge of Africa, and I added several countries to the list from your list.

I read Infidel a few years ago, and it has stuck with me, very powerful.

message 17: by Kimberly (last edited Dec 28, 2011 02:29PM) (new)

Kimberly | 130 comments Jenny I made the list of things that needed added As for the Guineas they're all seperate countries in Africa, I know Algiers is Algeria (I just refer to it as such because thats how my father refers to it..) I have an obsession with Africa and plan to travel across it one day and hopefully settle down in Botswana or South Africa.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments So you are saying there are three?

I saw the list that was very detailed as to what I should add, but I can usually figure that out. :) That must be over on the master list.

message 19: by Kimberly (last edited Dec 28, 2011 02:36PM) (new)

Kimberly | 130 comments Actually I deleted the list (I didn't want to seem pushy) but I have it saved I only made it because I had time on my hands. There are infact three seperate Guinea's in Africa (maybe they like the name lol).

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments Heck, I'll never judge another person who enjoys a good list-making endeavor.

Okay, I've added Equitorial Guinea to the list, alphabetically in the E's. Now all three are represented! This entire endeavor has been a lesson in recent geography. I thought I had most of it down, but my geography class was a good 20 years ago, and a lot of the world has changed since then....

message 21: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 130 comments Aww Thanks.. (I discovered a couple new countries too :D )

message 22: by Chel (new)

Chel | 187 comments Also, not to be confused with the Pacific Ocean country, Papua Papua New Guinea (sp?)

message 23: by Chel (new)

Chel | 187 comments I just love your Africa-centric list and am, for whatever reason, obsessed a little with Gambia, so I'll be interested to here what you think of the book from there.

Why thank you Chel :) I think I'll go have a peak at your list. I'll be sure to let you know what I think I have high hopes for the book.

message 26: by Kat (new)

Kat (katzombie) | 49 comments Kimberly you have fantastic taste - we both have Half of a Yellow Sun and Reading Lolita in Tehran

I nearly had the same picks for NZ and Netherlands but I already had one for Netherlands and The Whale Rider was too expensive.

I'll be interested to hear what you think of My Traitor's Heart: A South African Exile Returns to Face His Country, His Tribe, and His Conscience - it's been on my wishlist for about three years now!

message 27: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 130 comments Thanks Kat!
My Traitor's Heart A South African Exile Returns to Face His Country, His Tribe, and His Conscience by Rian Malan is pretty good so far, only about 10 pages in but I like his writing.

We might also have A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah in common because I might be giving that one a chance once I dig it out of the rubble.

message 28: by Kat (new)

Kat (katzombie) | 49 comments Ugh that reminds me, I have a few to 'unearth' too!

Kimberly | 130 comments I've also decided to take a trip to China on my way across the world so I've added China and I'll be reading Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See thanks to Pragya for convincing me to read it

It looks like I'll be visiting certain countries twice:)

message 38: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 130 comments Also adding I Dare to Say African Women Share Their Stories of Hope and Survival by Hilda Twongyeirwe to Uganda. It seems as though I'll be reading a few more books than I thought since I'll be visiting more than 52 countries and will be visiting some countries twice.

message 39: by Chel (new)

Chel | 187 comments That's a good list.

message 40: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 130 comments Thanks Chel :)

message 41: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 130 comments I'm going to re-do my list as I go because I keep finding new books that fit the challenge and I'm visiting some countries twice.

I'm really enjoying the journey around the world through books. I think this challenge is just what I needed to sort somethings out in my personal life.

I'm feeling very inspired by two books I've read and one that I am currently reading. so much so that I've decided to get my ESL certification and teach abroad in Africa.
