Time to 'Ring In' our newest random read- The Mote in God's Eye

I am about 4 chapters in so far---seems like it will be interesting!

Sandra (sleo) I read this a while back for another group. It's good space opera - a little dated, but ok.

Tim (tproff) | 14 comments It's worth noting that this story is set in same universe as Pournelle's CoDominium series. Characters in Mote frequently make reference to events and political structures of CoDominium. Knowing a little about it adds to the story IMHO - Here's

Cheers!

Tim (tproff) | 14 comments I'm really enjoying this book. I have mixed feelings about Niven's writing, which I hate admitting because the guy has such a wonderful imagination. Never read any Pournelle by himself but he and Niven seem to work quite well together. They collaborated on Lucifer's Hammer which was good too.

Banner | 138 comments This has one of the best alien cultures ever!

Yeah - in my mind's eye I see them as asymmetrical domos

So far, Im really not connecting with any of the characters yet. They havent reached the aliens yet so maybe Im still just in the exposition/world-building stage.

Banner | 138 comments Maggie, it's almost like two books once you get to the aliens.

Banner | 138 comments Tim that's a good image (especially in the museum).

I certainly thought some of the characters were drawn better than others, and Banner's right, that happens more as they interact with the aliens. I did get to be quite fond of Renner and the Moties themselves are very interesting.

Edmond Barrett (edmondbarrett) | 12 comments The Alien bits are to be honest much better than the human which are really a bit dated.

toria (vikz writes) (victoriavikzwrites) just started reading- comments soon.

I am still finding myself skipping a lot of the technical stuff though...

plus I think theyre being very well, snotty, about the moties...seems kind of ignorant.

message 16: by Tim (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tim (tproff) | 14 comments Yes - the conclusions about how to deal with the Moties seem to take their cue from the Cold War and George Kennan. On a somewhat related note, does anyone else read Hegel into the cycles of Motie civilizations?

George (wegason) | 33 comments I loved this novel. It has dated in places but is a great story of an encounter with an alien species, who are I think, very well depicted in terms of their difference to humanity.

A lot of Pournelle's separate works take place in the same "universe" as Mote in God's Eye, though most of them take place hundreds of years prior to those events. I've read a few of them, hit and miss for the most part.

King David's Spaceship actually takes place around the same time as Mote in God's Eye.

The only Niven works that I've read was Flatlander, which is an awesome collection of short stories.

I am about 3/5 of the way through-had a hard time getting into it at first...but now that both cultures are being a little more 'open', it is a lot more interesting!
