Jessy (snuggleglooms) | 381 comments Brenda why do you think the Ann Frank story is still so popular? Pretty much on all the lists you suggested she was listed. What is it about her story that has captured everybody so much?

message 18: by Kylie (new)

Kylie Got a few lined up for other challenges, will add them as i read them.

I don't know Jessy...it's always been a heartwarming but tragic story. She was so young, and the fact that she died so close to the end of the war, when she was basically only 2 weeks away from being free. The book I listed I only picked up last week, it was one I hadn't seen before. I think people are just captivated by her courage, and the courage of those around her, her family and the friends who tried to keep them safe, at risk of their own lives, I don't think it will ever not be read!

When my daughter was travelling overseas a few years ago, she actually went to Ann Frank's house, she said it was fascinating, but eerie.

I think your right. I read The Diary of Anne Frank when I was young. I think to because it captures in the face of true evil the human spirit can still shine through. All the risks the friends and family took are an example of that.

But I also think maybe it puts a human face onto something that the sheer size of the atrocities that were happening can be overwhelming and it shrinks it down into something that is more personal if that makes it sense.

Sally906 | 73 comments I have a couple of non-fiction that I need to read for various year-long challenges - so will read either

The Good Life Up the Yukon Without a Paddle by Dorian Amos The Good Life: Up the Yukon Without a Paddleby Dorian Amos

or

The Exact Same Moon Fifty Acres and a Family by Jeanne Marie Laskas The Exact Same Moon: Fifty Acres and a Family by Jeanne Marie Laskas

I may even read both :)

That's exactly right Jessy...it's something that I think will always be interesting to whatever generation of people want to read about Anne Frank and the horrors of the war.

Maggie Jessy wrote: "Brenda wrote: "Jessy wrote: "Brenda why do you think the Ann Frank story is still so popular? Pretty much on all the lists you suggested she was listed. What is it about her story that has captured..."

Jessy I think you've nailed it on the head. The scope of a world war reduces the appalling conflict to numbers, dates, battles. However when looked at from a more personal view it allows us to realise the truth - how it affects people, often and usually innocent. It helps us understand how it was, and allows us to wonder how we would cope in similar circumstances.

Maggie Brenda: When my daughter was travelling overseas a few years ago, she actually went to Ann Frank's house, she said it was fascinating, but eerie.

I can imagine it would have been. When I have visited areas / places where appalling events have occurred there is definitely a sense of history mixed with unease. My sister tells me that birds will not fly over Auschwitz - does anyone know if this is true?

My daughter went to both Auschwitz and Birkenau...she said Birkenau was deathly silent, no birds or anything..so eerie, ghostly, just something she had a lot of trouble explaining, but she said it gave her goosebumps. The friend she was with couldn't get out of there soon enough.
