Snyder, Maria V. - Touch of Power - Start Date April 23rd
Chapters 12 - 14
23. Not only is Kerrick taking Avry to see her sister, he's offering to bring Noelle with them. Why the change in heart? Do you trust Kerrick?
24. Kerrick left Belen in charge but everyone listened to Avry instead. Is this a shift in dynamics? Why did they pay attention to her instead of someone they've been with for a couple of years?
25. Were you surprised by Noelle's betrayal?
26. Anyone else say "Oh sh*t" when Kerrick was captured? And the whipping? *cringe*
27. Avry is crediting guilt for her need to rescue and heal Kerrick. You by that excuse? And why is she keeping all his secrets for him?
28. "Belen glanced at me as if I knew what Kerrick meant." At least someone isn't as clueless as our heroine.
29. Whoa. She met Ryne? Did you see that coming?
30. I'm not convinced Kerrick nows the plague kills healers when they heal someone. You?
31. Wife?? *pause* Oh, thank the stars. But still. What an utter b*tch.
32. Impressions and comments on Estrid?
33. F*cking cliffhanger.
Chapters 15 - 18
34. I must admit I wasn’t thinking of Avry ‘sharing magic with Kerrick. You? All in all, that was a pretty fast battle/escape. What do you think?
35. **gasp!** Flea! **sniffle** WTH is with putting him in the Death Lily? Because he had “potential? Will he be reincarnated? Or am I just being wistful? (And later, Avry comments about the ‘dead-dead marauders: “They don’t deserve the honor… when Quain infers they be given the Death Lilies. Why?)
36. Who was the dead man with the sword through his heart? Why was he protecting the contents of the broken crate? Alright, any more guesses about the Death Lilies? Or their seeds?
37. Okay, I’m confused over the double betrayal. Jael kept Kerrick from killing Prince Ryne in boarding school? WTH? Why? Did she have a conscience then? And Kerrick is a prince also? (No surprise for me. You?) Comments.
38. Surprised that Avry admitted that she didn’t want to leave when confronted by Belen’s question?
39. Do you think the death mage, Sepp, (who was on Kerrick’s father’s staff) really is loyal to Kerrick?
40. Will Avry learn anything the plague research papers? Are the olaine plants going to be part of the answer to plague mystery? Will she be able to return to study them? Why did the plague’s epicenter begin nearby the Healers Guild? Remember, they weren’t carriers. Could there have been a conspiracy?
41. Did Tohon’s spy give Prince Ryne the plague or something else?
42. Will either Avry’s diary or necklace come in handy later?
43. Is Quain right to be concerned about Jael coming after them again? Or is she truly out of the picture?
44. What do you make of the ‘dead-dead marauders and one dead ufa? Remember, Tohon called an ufa to protect him when he an Kerrick got in that fight in boarding school. Is there a connection? Why were they turned onto their stomachs?
45. Zombies?! Yikes. Comments on ‘King Tohon’s special soldiers? And he’s a LIFE magician? WTH?
46. Were you surprised at the identity of the handsome mercenary? And Avry sure is getting kidnapped and saved a lot, isn’t she? BTW, just what did those kisses to her hand and then forehead do to her? Why does he want her to come to him?
47. Whoa! Just why did Avry agree to heal Prince Ryne? Is she that afraid of ‘King Tohon?
Chapters 19 - 21
48.) I would think that Kerrick would have been a little nicer with Avry deciding to heal Ryne. His reply was a little a**holeish. (beginning of Chapter 19)
49.) So looks like Ryne helped spread the rumors about the healers. And he injured Avry when she was trying to protect Tara. Now I understand why she had such a hard time agreeing to heal him.
50.) Poor Belen! He is too sweet to have to lose his sister!
51.) For just being healed, Sepp sure is a sourpuss. Is he just cranky or does he have a problem taking orders from women? Avry also says that maybe Kerrick doesn't trust Sepp fully? Could she be on to something?
52.) Avry comes up with this crazy plan which involves Sepp going with her. Would you trust someone you JUST met to "have your back" for some thing this serious?
53.) I teared up when Belen gave the juggling stones to Avry. You? For such a book full of secrets and deceit there are some really touching moments.
54.) I was surprised at how well Avry did with coming up with the contract with Tohon. Do you think there is anything she left out that could be a loophole later on? Whould you have asked for anything different?
55.) Tohon creeps me out. Adjoining rooms and he has my coffin??? Oh hell no...
Chapters 22 - 24
56. Do you think Avry will resist or succumb to Tohon's touch?
57. Tohon really is unpredictable. He doesn't get mad when Avry snoops around the castle but he blows a gasket when Avry doesn't wear the dress he wants her to. Can you say cuckoo?
58. Theories on why the Death Lilies would give Avry the toxin sacks and what she could do with them? (Interesting that the plant would give it to Avry while Tohon is extracting the same thing like crazy)
59. What was your reaction to Kerrick being in the garden and his little confession?
60. Tohon's life magic prevents him from getting sick. Wouldn't this make him almost immortal? I wonder how someone would go about killing a life magician. Any ideas?
61. Tohon has proven that healers are survivors of death lily attacks. Do you think he is also using the toxic sacks to create his zombies? Or was he injecting something else into them?
62. That little traitor! I think we all knew that Sepp couldn't be trusted but did you suspect that he was working with Tohon all this time?
63. What do you think Tohon will do to punish Avry for double crossing him?
Chapters 25 26
64. Who do you think is right about how Prince Ryne was found? Tohon or Kerrick? Later, how about Tohon “allowing Kerrick to rescue Avry so she could heal Sepp in time? Do you think Tohon has used his power to brainwash Sepp, or was that not even necessary?
65. What is your impression of Prince Ryne? Think he has learned anything? Will all this make him a better leader?
66. I don’t know why, but I was expecting the injured to be Kerrick and Belen, not the soldiers carrying the injured to be Kerrick and Loren. You? Of course, in hindsight, Belen would have been too obvious.
67. “Did I hear some girlie screams in there? “That was from one of the guards. LOL! That’s what I like, a little lightness.
68. Were you surprised when Kerrick had Avry take the lead?
69. What did you think about the role of the Peace Lilies in Avry et al’s escape? Were you surprised she insisted on keeping her word to Tohon? Was it because of her personal agenda?
70. So, Kerrick hadn’t anticipated Avry’s demise. Was this as you figured?
71. Okay, is Zila just too cute, or what? Think she and Danny will be in a future book? Did you like their involvement in Avry’s plan? I was surprised at how Avry used the toxin sacks. You? Loved that Flea’s juggling stones came in handy.
72. Okay, I’m glad Avry and Kerrick got to consummate their love, but really? When she so sick? Comments.
73. What did you think about the Peace Lily’s intervention after the Death Lily spit Avry out?
74. At the author’s website, she has a contest going. Can you answer all the questions regarding this book? I must confess, I had to look up a couple: . Did you?
75. What was your overall rating of this book? The major questions I have are what happened to Tohon and which plant was used to reanimate the dead-dead soldiers. What outstanding questions do you have and hope will be answered in the next two books in this series?

Does this sound okay?

1. Sounds like “mob mentality took over when the plague ensued. Gives me shivers. Have you ever experienced this phenomenon?
2. I like the way Avry of Kazan seems almost to be compelled to heal the little girl, Fawn, at the beginning. As if it is an innate characteristic of her nature. She actually has a lot of stellar attributes. What saves her from being too much of a ‘Mary Sue?
3. Being a nurse, I am always fascinated by fictional healers that have to absorb a patient’s symptoms. Scary stuff, that. And I’m not big on feeling sick, even for a short amount of time. Could you do it?
4. The plague and the warring factions give this book a ‘post-apocalyptic feel to this book. Do you like the genre? Do you have any favorites?
5. What is your first impression of Kerrick of Alga? Any predictions on his magical abilities? Why is he so dedicated to Prince Ryne? I was wondering if there was going to be a love interest between Avry and Kerrick; however, now I’m not so sure after (view spoiler) Do you think there is still a possibility? What is with the tingling when he touches her?
6. Life magicians, death magicians, man-eating plants; looks like we have some more world building to be revealed. Plus, Avry is supposed to heal Prince Ryne, yet she despises him? It sounds like the death magician is keeping the ‘suspended Prince moments from death, which would surely lead to Avry’s demise. Whoa, baby. What a dilemma. A bit more of a decision than sacrificing her life for an innocent toddler. Comments.
7. Loren, Quain, Flea, Belen. Do you have a favorite yet, or one you are interested in learning more about?
8. I’m assuming there really wasn’t a Kissing Spider on Flea. Think he’ll be able to forgive Avry?
9. “Gdzٳ. O.M.G. What a place to stop! LOL! Did you read on to see who had caught Avry?

1. Sounds like “mob mentality took over when the plague ensued. Gives me shivers. Have you ever experienced this phenomenon?
Not in my own experience and definitely not to that extreme, but even here on ŷ occasionally you'll see someone sort of verbally go after someone, definitely not the same as what was going on in the book, and others will join in instead of giving the person the benefit of the doubt. Thankfully that doesn't happen very often, but I think there are some people who just get a kick out of ruffling a few feathers. I usually get upset when it is targeted toward an author. While it didn't happen on ŷ Stephanie Meyer got a lot of threats for Twilight. That just isn't right.
2. I like the way Avry of Kazan seems almost to be compelled to heal the little girl, Fawn, at the beginning. As if it is an innate characteristic of her nature. She actually has a lot of stellar attributes. What saves her from being too much of a ‘Mary Sue?
In the case of the child, I think very few would be able to just stand by and do nothing when you know you could take it all away.
3. Being a nurse, I am always fascinated by fictional healers that have to absorb a patient’s symptoms. Scary stuff, that. And I’m not big on feeling sick, even for a short amount of time. Could you do it?
I doubt it. I think something like that would take a very special individual.
4. The plague and the warring factions give this book a ‘post-apocalyptic feel to this book. Do you like the genre? Do you have any favorites?
I do like the genre. I'm not sure what my favorite would be. I'll have to think about it.
I read this book a while ago so I'm going to not say too much, but I thought the same thing till the spoiler moment.
Comments.
I can't comment.
7. Loren, Quain, Flea, Belen. Do you have a favorite yet, or one you are interested in learning more about?
I'm not sure who was my favorite at this point.
8. I’m assuming there really wasn’t a Kissing Spider on Flea. Think he’ll be able to forgive Avry?
Again I can't comment.
9. “Gdzٳ. O.M.G. What a place to stop! LOL! Did you read on to see who had caught Avry?
Of course I did and would have if I'd read it for the first time now. :)

#1 Yes, and people on the Internet have the added element of being somewhat anonymous. A shame that that happened to Ms. Meyer. While I didn’t enjoy the rest of the series,

#2 When our census dropped in ICU, I cross-trained to Post Anesthesia Recovery Room. When I agreed to do this I didn’t realize I would be expected to have PALS certification (advanced life support training for children). While I wouldn’t be required to take over care of a child in recovery, which is very specialized, I would be expected to act in an emergency. One thing you have to be able to do, since their veins are so small, is preform intraosseous infusion fluid resuscitation which is directly into the bone marrow in lieu of starting an IV. You do what you have to do! Luckily, I never had to do that, but I did have some emergencies with children in there.
#3 I concur!
#4 I like the genre too; however, I really haven’t read that many books. I remember years ago I read

#5 Ah! So I’m not alone.
#9 LOL! Yeah, me too. Trying to stop at tomorrow’s section now. Don’t know if I can.

You can absolutely see how the mob mentality took over in the book. I think that it's something very real in our society, to varying degrees. I've been lucky enough to have not been the victim of this in my life. The biggest example that comes to my mind are crimes caused by this inate fear that is built up in people- I remember seeing a news story years ago, after September 11th, where a middle-eastern cab driver was beat to death my a mob of people. There are so many different levels to this, and I agree that the internet has definitely lent to this.
2. I like the way Avry of Kazan seems almost to be compelled to heal the little girl, Fawn, at the beginning. As if it is an innate characteristic of her nature. She actually has a lot of stellar attributes. What saves her from being too much of a ‘Mary Sue?
Good question! I think that if there's something you can do to take someone's pain away, that you would. But you see that she tries to fight the urge to help her, that inner struggle, because of the predicament that the healers have been in since the plague.
3. Being a nurse, I am always fascinated by fictional healers that have to absorb a patient’s symptoms. Scary stuff, that. And I’m not big on feeling sick, even for a short amount of time. Could you do it?
I'd like to be able to say that, yes, hands down I would be able to do this. If it were someone who I cared for, I would absolutely do this. Or a child. But, if it was someone who is not an inately good person, I don't think that I would.
4. The plague and the warring factions give this book a ‘post-apocalyptic feel to this book. Do you like the genre? Do you have any favorites?
I like it so far, this is really my first in this genre of 'post-apocalyptic'. I'm interested to read more :)
5. What is your first impression of Kerrick of Alga? Any predictions on his magical abilities? Why is he so dedicated to Prince Ryne? I was wondering if there was going to be a love interest between Avry and Kerrick; however, now I’m not so sure after (view spoiler)[he back-handed her! (hide spoiler)] Do you think there is still a possibility? What is with the tingling when he touches her?
I was also wondering if they were going to lead into a love interest with Kerrick, but my mind has definitely been changed since the moment of the spoiler. We shall see, I guess!
Comments.
I feel the same way on this... if it were me, which it's obviously not, how can this be justified? It's one thing to save an innocent, but to save someone that you despise, knowing that it will cause your own death? Yikes.
7. Loren, Quain, Flea, Belen. Do you have a favorite yet, or one you are interested in learning more about?
No favorites yet, but I'm sure that will change within another few chapters.
8. I’m assuming there really wasn’t a Kissing Spider on Flea. Think he’ll be able to forgive Avry?
I think that he'll be able to forgive her... it's hard to say so early in the story, though.
9. “Gdzٳ. O.M.G. What a place to stop! LOL! Did you read on to see who had caught Avry?
I stopped- very begrudgingly, though LOL

1. Sounds like “mob mentality took over when the plague ensued. Gives me shivers. Have you ever experienced this phenomenon?
Not personally and I hope never to experience it. When people become 'the mob" they are usually scary...
2. I like the way Avry of Kazan seems almost to be compelled to heal the little girl, Fawn, at the beginning. As if it is an innate characteristic of her nature. She actually has a lot of stellar attributes. What saves her from being too much of a ‘Mary Sue?
Avry comments at one time that healers have very strong mothering instinct. And it is logical, for them to have a wish & ability to heal people by taking their pain/illness and suffering trough it themselves.
3. Being a nurse, I am always fascinated by fictional healers that have to absorb a patient’s symptoms. Scary stuff, that. And I’m not big on feeling sick, even for a short amount of time. Could you do it?
Well part of my comment for question two, applies here.
As for if I would be able to do it? No. (I won't lie and pretend to be more noble than I am.) I am scared of pain and getting hurt and even if I would want to, I would probably freeze and would not be able to do anything...
4. The plague and the warring factions give this book a ‘post-apocalyptic feel to this book. Do you like the genre? Do you have any favorites?
Yes I like post-apocalyptic genre, although I did not read many books that could be labeled like that. These books are usually great studies of human behavior.
My favorite is probably: I am Legend (Yes, there is a movie with Will Smith and it has almost no similarity to the book.)
I still can't decide if I like Kerrick or not. I have mixed feelings.
As for his dedication to Prince Ryne, I don't know. I doubt that they are relatives, probably political admiration or they have some goal together. Maybe Prince Ryne knows a cure for plague? :D
I am currently cheering for Avry & Belon combo. Although I know that it will never happen. He is too good, main heroine always has to fall for a bad guy who by the end turns out to be noble & misunderstood. So I would say, yes probably Kerrick.
Comments.
Yeah, world definitely sounds interesting. I am intrigued with Death lilies and are they connected to plague somehow (me and my crazy theories). :D
And I got impression that Avry would sacrifice herself and die to heal another human, but for some reason she hates Prince Ryne...
7. Loren, Quain, Flea, Belen. Do you have a favorite yet, or one you are interested in learning more about?
Flea is the cutest. Like a little kid. I would like to find out more about all of them...
8. I’m assuming there really wasn’t a Kissing Spider on Flea. Think he’ll be able to forgive Avry?
I think he will. He seems goodhearted.
9. “Gdzٳ. O.M.G. What a place to stop! LOL! Did you read on to see who had caught Avry?
Yeah, definitely cliffhanger. I stopped just to answer questions and now I am going to continue. :D

I have not and the idea of it freaks me out. I can't understand how people can act like that. I have never been that scared before, but I hope I would still act reasonable!
2. I like the way Avry of Kazan seems almost to be compelled to heal the little girl, Fawn, at the beginning. As if it is an innate characteristic of her nature. She actually has a lot of stellar attributes. What saves her from being too much of a ‘Mary Sue?
She does have a lot of good qualities, but you can see she has a few weaknesses too. One would be she seems to be a little judgemental or naive. Quick to believe the worst of Prince Rayne without having all the info.
3. Being a nurse, I am always fascinated by fictional healers that have to absorb a patient’s symptoms. Scary stuff, that. And I’m not big on feeling sick, even for a short amount of time. Could you do it?
That's a hard one to answer. I have fibromyalgia so there are lots of times when I am not feeling well and I hurt, but I have to keep doing my normal stuff because I have five kids. I guess it would depend who you were doing it for. For my family and friends? Absolutely. For a stranger, I think it would be harder.
4. The plague and the warring factions give this book a ‘post-apocalyptic feel to this book. Do you like the genre? Do you have any favorites?
I do like the genre. My favorite being The Hunger Games. :) I also like Divergent.
I definitely think there is going to be a love interest between the two. I think as the book goes on we will learn what motivates Kerrick and we will find out his motivations are good. I was surprised by the slapping though.
Comments.
Yeah, I think there is going to be have to be a good reason revealed to convince Avry to save the Prince. Or maybe she will decide to do it for Kerrick since it means so much to him assuming they become close. :)
7. Loren, Quain, Flea, Belen. Do you have a favorite yet, or one you are interested in learning more about?
Belen is my favorite!
8. I’m assuming there really wasn’t a Kissing Spider on Flea. Think he’ll be able to forgive Avry?
Yes, I don't think he will hold out for long. He should be hoping for her forgiveness for helping to keep her hostage!
9. “Gdzٳ. O.M.G. What a place to stop! LOL! Did you read on to see who had caught Avry?
I admit, I did read on.

I still remember someone suggesting something like that could happen and I said it wouldn't. I was wrong and they were right. I guess in some situations people just need someone to blame for past or present things and take it out on the most handy person available. It's truly sad. I wouldn't have the foggiest how to stop a mob like that. I think it would be impossible.

#1 Yes, I remember that post 9/11 news report. I also recall reading the book In Cold Blood and they said the two people who committed that crime absolute could not have committed it without the other that their personalities drove them onward in the situation. I wonder if the people that beat to death that middle-eastern cab driver wonder how they could have done that now.
#2 Yes, the Healers are in quite a predicament!
#3 That would be a hard one. I was a cardiac nurse for years and I read an article were a man in prison received a heart transplant, then they let him out of prison early (due to his health); he went on to committed another heinous crime. One of my co-workers just cried and cried over that.
#5 Yes, we’ll see.
#6 Yeah, yikes!
#8 I’m betting Flea forgives Avry too.
#9 Oh! You are so good! Certainly better than me.

#1 Very scary!
#2 Good point about her mothering instinct.
#3 Thanks for being honest! I was surprised at the number of nurses I worked with who were afraid of pain or had a low tolerance for it.
#4 It doesn’t? Well, then . . . maybe I’ll try it. LOL!
#5 I was wondering if they were related; however, I’m going your route and guessing it is something political that connects them. I hadn’t thought Prince Tyne might know of a cure. I was thinking of Belon for Avry when he stepped in too! Love a man who doesn’t want to see a woman battered. Laughing out loud over your “main heroine always...noble & misunderstood… LOL!
#6 Ah! Yes the Death Lilies. Could be. Wonder why she hates the Prince so much? Hope he’s not the love interest, LOL!
#7 & #8 Yeah, I like Flea’s enthusiasm and “good hearted.
#9

#1 Yeah, like Wildebeests stampeding!
#2 Ah! She is a bit stubborn, but I like it. I thought her faking out Flea was a bit “un-Mary Sue but justified.
#3 I have fibromyalgia too! It is painful; I feel for you, Kim. (Five kids! Yikes!)
#4 I have not read either of those yet.
#5 It certainly surprised me!
#6 Really? Hmmm we’ll see.
#7 Yes. Liking the big guy.

2. I like the way Avry of Kazan seems almost to be compelled to heal the little girl, Fawn, at the beginning. As if it is an innate characteristic of her nature. She actually has a lot of stellar attributes. What saves her from being too much of a ‘Mary Sue?
Great question! She has some fire to her -- which balances out her nurturing side. She is very adamant about not saving the Prince, she tried to escape, and she has some bad a** knife wielding skills. In other words, she knows her mind and won't back down.
3. Being a nurse, I am always fascinated by fictional healers that have to absorb a patient’s symptoms. Scary stuff, that. And I’m not big on feeling sick, even for a short amount of time. Could you do it?
I'd like to say yes, but I have a really low threshold for pain.
4.The plague and the warring factions give this book a ‘post-apocalyptic feel to this book. Do you like the genre? Do you have any favorites?
I am beginning to like apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction. Last year I couldn't stomach reading them (with the exception of The Hunger Games triliogy). Now, most of my favorite books so far this year have been apocalyptic fiction. I'm still a YA and Romance girl above all things though.
5. What is your first impression of Kerrick of Alga? Any predictions on his magical abilities? Why is he so dedicated to Prince Ryne? I was wondering if there was going to be a love interest between Avry and Kerrick; however, now I’m not so sure after [he back-handed her! (hide spoiler)] Do you think there is still a possibility? What is with the tingling when he touches her?
I liked him at first but not so much after that slap. He has a lot of groveling to do. I think the tingling is a result of them being magical beings.
Comments.
I want to more about why Avry hates the Prince so much and why Kerrick is so loyal to him. Sounds like something that will keep these two apart.
7. Loren, Quain, Flea, Belen. Do you have a favorite yet, or one you are interested in learning more about?
Of the four, I have taken a strong liking to Belen the most because of his compassion for Avry. I am mostly interested in learning more about Kerrick though.
8. I’m assuming there really wasn’t a Kissing Spider on Flea. Think he’ll be able to forgive Avry?
Yes, he seems too jovial to hold a grudge for long
9. “Gdzٳ. O.M.G. What a place to stop! LOL! Did you read on to see who had caught Avry?
I couldn't stop reading! Now I'm at chapter 6. Forgive me buddy-readers, for I have sinned :(

Ohhhh! Lisa Kay is gonna get you ;). But I'm glad I'm not the only one who couldn't refrain from reading forward. You're halfway done though!

Ohhhh! Lisa Kay is gonna get you ;). But I'm glad I'm not the only one who couldn't refrain fr..."
I know!! I can't help myself though. I love this author's books!!

No way! I will have to go see if I can find it. My favorite book by her was the first Study book and I am liking this one just as much.

1. Sounds like “mob mentality took over when the plague ensued. Gives me shivers. Have you ever experienced this phenomenon?
In small scale at work, usually when one EA is causing problems for another and things snowball into a hatefest.
2. I like the way Avry of Kazan seems almost to be compelled to heal the little girl, Fawn, at the beginning. As if it is an innate characteristic of her nature. She actually has a lot of stellar attributes. What saves her from being too much of a ‘Mary Sue?
This is a question I ask myself of all heroines now, especially since I see disagreements about what a Mary Sue actually is. I'll have to ponder this and read the other responses. My immediate answer is that I don't identify with her completely and she's not one of those so-beautiful-but-doesn't-know-it heroines, so she's not a Mary Sue to me.
3. Being a nurse, I am always fascinated by fictional healers that have to absorb a patient’s symptoms. Scary stuff, that. And I’m not big on feeling sick, even for a short amount of time. Could you do it?
I don't think so. But I think Avry explained it well later on in the book (view spoiler) .
4. The plague and the warring factions give this book a ‘post-apocalyptic feel to this book. Do you like the genre? Do you have any favorites?
Post-apocalyptic/dystopian? No, I don't. I see this as a fantasy book though, so I love it.
I read this book a few months ago and can't remember my initial impressions, but in my review I said, "Despite his early examples of how to excel in the science of asshattery, Kerrick was a great character. It takes some time to warm up to him (spoiler redacted), but once his background and motivations start to come out, I couldn't help but like and respect him."
Comments.
The journey to Ryne and Avry discovering what's been going on in the world is what makes this book.
7. Loren, Quain, Flea, Belen. Do you have a favorite yet, or one you are interested in learning more about?
I love Belen. Flea annoys me a little bit and Loren and Quain don't really get a look in.
8. I’m assuming there really wasn’t a Kissing Spider on Flea. Think he’ll be able to forgive Avry?
Yep.
9. “Gdzٳ. O.M.G. What a place to stop! LOL! Did you read on to see who had caught Avry?
Oh yeah. This is me, after all! You know what cliffhangers do to me. ^o^

Awesome! We'll put you down for the 26th. Glad to have you, Sans :)

1. Sounds like “mob mentality took over when the plague ensued. Gives me shivers. Have you ever experienced this phenomenon?
I have experienced the mob mentality in response to a post I made on a thread on ŷ once. I decided to never post anywhere outside of our group after that. It seemed pointless. In the "real" world, however, I have never experienced it and hope that I never experience it.
2. I like the way Avry of Kazan seems almost to be compelled to heal the little girl, Fawn, at the beginning. As if it is an innate characteristic of her nature. She actually has a lot of stellar attributes. What saves her from being too much of a ‘Mary Sue?
Not sure about the answer to this one yet. So far it seems like she is an all around good person. I guess it depends on what happens in the rest of the book.
3. Being a nurse, I am always fascinated by fictional healers that have to absorb a patient’s symptoms. Scary stuff, that. And I’m not big on feeling sick, even for a short amount of time. Could you do it?
I would like to think that if I had the powers than I would do it, even if it cost me pain, but how is any one to know what they will do in a certain situation? I know I would be scared, like Avry was that I didn't know my own strength and in the process would end up dying because of that.
4. The plague and the warring factions give this book a ‘post-apocalyptic feel to this book. Do you like the genre? Do you have any favorites?
I like most books if they have a good plot and interesting story. As far as favorites of the apocalyptic, I would have to say Roar is one of my favorites, along with the Hunger Games trilogy.
I am wondering if his power doesn't have something to do with nature in some way. I am thinking the love interest is going to be a negative, unless something big happens to change it. I was wondering about Prince Ryne myself. I am wondering what caused such a strong reaction by Avery when his name was mentioned as the person she was to heal.
Comments.
I don't even know what to say about all of this. It seems so much was given to us in the first five chapters with very little background. I feel a little bit confused as to exactly how everything is related.
7. Loren, Quain, Flea, Belen. Do you have a favorite yet, or one you are interested in learning more about?
So far I like both Flea and Belen the best. The others I don't feel like I know them enough to even be attatched to them in any way.
8. I’m assuming there really wasn’t a Kissing Spider on Flea. Think he’ll be able to forgive Avry?
I think he will forgive her. His character just seems like the forgiving type.
9. “Gdzٳ. O.M.G. What a place to stop! LOL! Did you read on to see who had caught Avry?
No I didn't but I am about to read a bit more because I just can't resist any longer, LOL

I see it online all the time. A news story comes up that X person has been charged with X crime, and suddenly everyone is running for pitchforks and torches and condemning them to an eternity in prison...without evidence or facts at all! It baffles me, it really does. And if someone asks a genuinely good question about the situation, you get thrown to the mob too.
2. I like the way Avry of Kazan seems almost to be compelled to heal the little girl, Fawn, at the beginning. As if it is an innate characteristic of her nature. She actually has a lot of stellar attributes. What saves her from being too much of a ‘Mary Sue?
I think at this point the thing keeping her from Mary Sue status is her instinct to save herself. Yes, she was compelled to help the girl, but she could have helped sooner and didn't to protect herself.
3. Being a nurse, I am always fascinated by fictional healers that have to absorb a patient’s symptoms. Scary stuff, that. And I’m not big on feeling sick, even for a short amount of time. Could you do it?
I would like to say so, knowing that I would be okay in a shorter period of time...but I think ultimately I would start looking on it selfishly as for who to heal.
4. The plague and the warring factions give this book a ‘post-apocalyptic feel to this book. Do you like the genre? Do you have any favorites?
I absolutely love the post-apocalyptic/dystopia genre. Probably the best I have read recently are Divergent and Article 5...just absolutely stellar.
I would hope it isn't a possibility! I couldn't support that romance after he whacks her across the face for no reason. I am thinking at this point that his magic has something to do with hiding himself of something he touches from the view of others...it would explain that whole scene in the woods when they were escaping the town watch.
Comments.
I am thinking that this may be a situation of her judging someone based on what she hears about someone. But I think that as she learns more about him, she may change her view and see it less one-sidedly.
7. Loren, Quain, Flea, Belen. Do you have a favorite yet, or one you are interested in learning more about?
I really like Belen a lot, but Flea is my favorite. He makes me laugh and his self deprecating humor is infectious. I love how he interacts with the others.
8. I’m assuming there really wasn’t a Kissing Spider on Flea. Think he’ll be able to forgive Avry?
I think he will, and ultimately he'll forget about it completely if they find her in danger.
9. “Gdzٳ. O.M.G. What a place to stop! LOL! Did you read on to see who had caught Avry?
I didn't...yet! I am trying so very hard to not read ahead this time, I have not succeeded once yet..but this could be the one. Maybe.

#1 That’s okay, Sashana; don’t feel you have to answer any question you don’t want to.
#2 She does seem to know her mind. I like her ‘stick-to-it-ness.
#5 Yes, I definitely see groveling in his future if he is going to make any points with me.
#6 You are probably right.
#9 LMAO! You and Kim L. are in big doo-doo. (view spoiler)

#1 Yeah, I hate it when everyone jumps on the band wagon. Can’t people come to their own conclusions/decisions?
#2 Really? Hmmm I’ll have to look for the definition, see how it differs from “Goodie-Two-Shoes.
#3 Satisfaction. And compulsion. What a combo.
#4 Ah! Yes, I would say it is almost a post-apocalyptic fantasy, what with the plague and all. Very clever.
#5 We’ll see if the author can change my mind. She’s pretty talented.
#6 Yes! Love a ‘road trip story.
#7 Maybe it will peak you interest a bit more to tell you that on the audiobook Quain has a Scottish accent. **hee hee**
#9 Yes! I do! I had to laugh when we were assigned to stop her. Immediately thought of our past “buddy reads. LOL! We sure knew where to end the sections, LOL!

#1 Aww, Laura! I’m sorry that happened to you.
#2 I think she is a good person too. It is (was) my understand that a ‘Mary Sue is someone who is to ‘perfect as written with no faults. I’ll have to investigate.
#3 Good point.
#4 I’ve never heard of The Roar, but saw you gave it 5. I’ll have to investigate.
#5 Interesting observation about Kerrick’s magic and Nature.

10.) I smell a love triangle brewing! How about you?
11.)I love how Avry has completely changed the group dynamics. Kerrick says before she came along everyone followed orders. Belen says before she came along Kerrick never listened to anyone. This made me laugh. Could this be a good thing or will it cloud the group's judgement and intuition too much? (We already had a close call while saving Melina).
12.) It is interesting to see how Avry's viewpoint of Ryne differs from theirs. We have the "good guy" version (from the men) and the "bad guy" version (from Avry). Which do you beleive more?
13.) I was wondering the difference between mage and magician. I thought they were the same so I started researching. Every thing I found on the two words made them sound the same yet Snyder seems to use them as two different things. Kerrick says he is a forest mage not an earth magician in Chapter 6. Could a mage be a magician, but only in a certain element (like the forest) while a magician draws pon the earth no matter where they are? Thoughts.
14.) So, 40 golds for Avry and 10 or 20 (can't remember) for Kerrick because of their abilities. Greedy greedy power hungry people!
15.) I don't remember who commented on it first in this thread about a possible relationship between Ryne, Belen and Kerrick, but the relationship is more personal than political. They are all friends.
16.) Seems the mercenaries aren't as stupid as I first thought. They led the group right into a trap. Sneaky!

10.) I smell a love triangle brewing! How about you?
Sorry, not me!
I think it's a good thing. People need to be fluid and changeable. If we stay static and stagnant too long, we don't know how to cope with new situations anymore.
12.) It is interesting to see how Avry's viewpoint of Ryne differs from theirs. We have the "good guy" version (from the men) and the "bad guy" version (from Avry). Which do you beleive more?
Right now, I believe the boys. Avry has a limited third person perspective that is down to mostly rumor and gossip.
Thoughts.
I...have no idea. ^o^ Good question though!
14.) So, 40 golds for Avry and 10 or 20 (can't remember) for Kerrick because of their abilities. Greedy greedy power hungry people!
For reals.
15.) I don't remember who said it first, but Kerrick and Belen's allegiance to Ryne is a little more personal. Ryne is their friend.
Right. They went to school together.
16.) Seems the mercenaries aren't as stupid as I first thought. They led the group right into a trap. Sneaky!
Bad doesn't always equal lack of intelligence!

10.) I smell a love triangle brewing! How about you?
Nope. Between who? This went totally over my head.
11.) I love how Avry has completely changed the group dynamics. Kerrick says before she came along everyone followed orders. Belen says before she came along Kerrick never listened to anyone. This made me laugh. Could this be a good thing or will it cloud the group's judgment and intuition too much? (We already had a close call while saving Melina).
I think it will be a good thing!
12.) It is interesting to see how Avry's viewpoint of Ryne differs from theirs. We have the "good guy" version (from the men) and the "bad guy" version (from Avry). Which do you believe more?
Probably a bit of both. If push came to shove, I’d say the guys, but that is just because of reading this author’s past books. Plus, I think the author is trying to show that Avry has been touched a bit by the ‘mob mentality in her own thinking.
13.) I was wondering the difference between mage and magician. I thought they were the same so I started researching. Everything I found on the two words made them sound the same yet Snyder seems to use them as two different things. Kerrick says he is a forest mage not an earth magician in Chapter 6. Could a mage be a magician, but only in a certain element (like the forest) while a magician draws upon the earth no matter where they are? Thoughts.
From what I’ve read on the Internet, they are pretty much the same, and is a matter of ‘nuanced differences with the magician leaning toward charlatan. However, as I thought, the mage has more to do with nature. I was, alas, mistaken in thinking the magician was more powerful; looks like the mage could best him.
14.) So, 40 golds for Avry and 10 or 20 (can't remember) for Kerrick because of their abilities. Greedy greedy power hungry people!
Really. Their sense of worth is warped.
15.) I don't remember who commented on it first in this thread about a possible relationship between Ryne, Belen and Kerrick, but the relationship is more personal than political. They are all friends.
Looks like. I was thinking there might be a ‘blood relationship between them, but no.
16.) Seems the mercenaries aren't as stupid as I first thought. They led the group right into a trap. Sneaky!
Really! I was surprised at that.

#10 Good! Then I didn’t miss anything.
#11 Good points.
#12 Ah! True.
#15 They did? GTK.
#16 Very true!

#10: I think the triangle would be between Belen, Avry, and Kerrick. I guess you and Sans are one the same page.

10. I smell a love triangle brewing! How about you?
*sniff sniff* I'm 50/50; sometimes I get that vibe but other times I sense nothing but friendship between Avery and Belen. I sincerely hope that there is not a love triangle. I like Kerrick and Belen and I don't want them to be hurt, they have a great relationship.
11. I love how Avry has completely changed the group dynamics. Kerrick says before she came along everyone followed orders. Belen says before she came along Kerrick never listened to anyone. This made me laugh. Could this be a good thing or will it cloud the group's judgement and intuition too much? (We already had a close call while saving Melina).
I think it's a good thing. They are communicating better as a group instead of Kerrick saying "jump" and the others asking "how high."
12. It is interesting to see how Avry's viewpoint of Ryne differs from theirs. We have the "good guy" version (from the men) and the "bad guy" version (from Avry). Which do you beleive more?
Is a person ever inherently good or bad? I don't think so, and I don't expect such from literary characters. Hopefully Ryne will have more layers than being a villain or a good Samaritan when he is introduced.
13. I was wondering the difference between mage and magician. Thoughts.
I honestly don't know the difference between a mage and a magician. I will research though. [EDIT] I looked on Google but couldn't find anything.
14. So, 40 golds for Avry and 10 or 20 (can't remember) for Kerrick because of their abilities. Greedy greedy power hungry people!
Ahhhh! Numbers! *covers eyes* You know I just did my math final, Rachel, so all numbers will frazzle my fragile mind. But it just seems like they'll keep raising the bounty on poor Avry.
15. I don't remember who commented on it first in this thread about a possible relationship between Ryne, Belen and Kerrick, but the relationship is more personal than political. They are all friends.
It does.

#10: I think the triangle would be between Belen, Avry, and Kerrick. I guess you and Sans are one the same page."
Correct. She doesn't have feelings for them yet, but i wouldn't be surprised if she had feelings for one or both later on.

My money is on Kerrick if a romance does blossom.

Book Description
Laying hands upon the injured and dying, Avry of Kazan absorbs their wounds and diseases into herself. But rather than being honored for her skills, she is hunted. Healers like Avry are accused of spreading the plague that has decimated the Fifteen Realms, leaving the survivors in a state of chaos.
Stressed and tired from hiding, Avry is abducted by a band of rogues who, shockingly, value her gift above the golden bounty offered for her capture. Their leader, an enigmatic captor-protector with powers of his own, is unequivocal in his demands: Avry must heal a plague-stricken prince—leader of a campaign against her people. As they traverse the daunting Nine Mountains, beset by mercenaries and magical dangers, Avry must decide who is worth healing and what is worth dying for. Because the price of peace may well be her life...

Chapters 5 - 8
10. I smell a love triangle brewing! How about you?
12. It is interesting to see how Avry's viewpoint of Ryne differs from theirs. We have the "good guy" version (from the men) and the "bad guy" version (from Avry). Which do you beleive more?
13. I was wondering the difference between mage and magician. Thoughts.
14. So, 40 golds for Avry and 10 or 20 (can't remember) for Kerrick because of their abilities. Greedy greedy power hungry people!
15. I don't remember who commented on it first in this thread about a possible relationship between Ryne, Belen and Kerrick, but the relationship is more personal than political. They are all friends.
16. Seems the mercenaries aren't as stupid as I first thought. They led the group right into a trap. Sneaky!
Chapters 9 - 11
Interesting how Avry could communicate with the Death Lilies, it seems like more of something Kerrick should be able to do. Do you think Avry's power goes beyond healing? I thought it was interesting the way she took off her shoes to feel the earth and sniffed the ear to find Kerrick while playing hide and seek.
18. There are eleven types of magic in this book forest, earth, water, fire, air, life, rock, death, moon, soon, and healing if given the choice, which power would you want to possess and what are some of the cool things you would do with said powers?
19. I'm such a sap! Am I the only one who went Awww when the boys presented Avry with her “graduation gifts? Any particular favorites among the gifts?
20. If you were a student at 'Belen's Knife School' whose face would you picture on the bulls-eye to make your aim better? Think: exes, bad coworkers and bosses, etc...
21. Any ideas on who the mysterious Jael could be? (If you've already read ahead and know the answer then please use spoiler tags and/or tell us your suspicions before you read about it).
22. Snyder certainly knows how to end a chapter, she has me holding my breath every time. I think she's going to hit us with a major cliffhanger. Any predictions on what will happen in the end?["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
