Beth A. (bethalm) | 67 comments Hi All!

Has anyone read Eragon? Is it clean? And the rest of the series? My ten year old son's starting to read it, and I don't remember the details. I'm especially wondering about Inheritance, which I haven't read.

Thanks!

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 11 comments My sister read Eragon (Inheritance, #1) and she said it was clean and she really enjoyed it but she stopped after the first book because she doesn't especially like magic and wizards in books.

Thalia (thaliaanderson) It's squeaky clean! (: I haven't read the rest of the series yet, but I know a ton of people who have, and there's nothing objectionable in them.

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 11 comments Hey Thalia!! we rated it the same amount of stars.

Elle (ell3) | 3 comments I've read the whole series. It's a pretty clean series depending on how strict you are with what you read.
The first book is pretty clean except Brom and Eragon get drunk in one scene and I think they might use the "d" word and hell sometimes. There's also violence in all of the books as well.

In the second book it's implied that Roran and Katrina have slept together.

The fourth book, as far as I can remember is clean as well.

That's all I can really remember. As far as YA fiction goes, it's a good series.

Elizabeth (emarsh13) The rest of the series has lots of gore. Lots and lots of gore -- specifically that word. Other than that, it's pretty clean, but there are other fantasy novels worth reading, IMO.

Beth A. (bethalm) | 67 comments Thanks Everyone. I was a little surprised when he brought it home, I'm glad to hear it's not too bad.

Elizabeth, do you have any recommendations for a ten year old boy? He loved Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Magyk, and Gregor the Overlander. He started but didn't finish
The Lightning Thief and The Ruins of Gorlan. I'm always looking for something good and somewhat age appropriate. Thanks.

Rachel (whitepicketfence) | 100 comments I have a 11 year old who goes through books faster than I can keep him stocked, so I haven't personally read everything that he enjoys, but one of his favorite series is Leven Thumps. Has your son tried that? My son's favorite genre is fantasy, but he'll read just about anything that is good. I'll see if I can get him to help me make a list of some of his top picks tonight and post them. I won't be able to personally verify their content, but he's pretty good about putting down books that are inappropriate,

Elizabeth (emarsh13) Rachel, I was going to suggest Leven Thumps! Obert Skye also has a few other series I'd suggest ... I think you'd be totally safe with that author. Also, Beth AND Rachel, have your boys read the 39 Clues series? Those are so much fun. Fablehaven may be a good one for them, as well. I remember my brothers devouring Red Wall.

Have they tried Peter and the Starcatchers? That's such a fun reading age! ALSO - try introducing the classics at this age ... Robinson Crusoe, Treasure Island, The Red Pony (with tissues, because it's impossible to not sob like a baby), or even Where the Red Fern Grows and Summer of the Monkeys.

Beth A. (bethalm) | 67 comments Hmm.. I checked out Leven Thumps. Maybe I can get him interested. Thank you Rachel and Elizabeth.

Rachel (whitepicketfence) | 100 comments My son and I sat down and made a short list (with a lot of variation) of additional books that he has enjoyed. I've put an asterisk by the ones I have also read.

*"Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher"

(anything by Andrew Clements--these are below our son's reading level, but my son still enjoys them).

"Redwall" (huge series) both my sons have devoured these and both said there was quite a bit of violence, but not gore. It is set in a world of rodents, where the main themes are opposition between good/evil.

*"War Horse" (much less intense than the movie, but a good child's book about the devastation of war.)

*"Ella Enchanted" (my son said not to let the cover or title sway your son--there is much for a young boy to love here (the movie was a horrid depiction of the book)

*"Maniac McGee" (some hard themes here)

"Dragon Rider"

"Larklight"

*"The City of Ember" (4 book series)

*"The Bronze Bow" (both my sons loved)

*"The Phantom Tollbooth"

*"Savvy" & "Scumble"

*"Searching For Dragons" (Enchanted Forest Chronicles #1-4)

Hope any books on this list spark an interest. If not, we have plenty more to add to it (you are always welcome to check my JV Lit bookshelf).
