Karol | 182 comments As we approach the end of the year, I'm enjoying having a bit more time off. Mount Washmore is calling to me from the laundry room, but my bookshelves are calling even louder! I have to say I admire folks who are able to put together a plan for their reading . . . I tend to have a long "To Read" list which doesn't even include all the books I have added to my shelves this year. So my first order of business (since I like to tidy up and get organized each New Year) will be to officially log all those new books into my To Read list. After that, I may try to come up with some kind of organized plan.

For those of you who do plan your reading lists ahead of time, is there something special that you do? Does having a plan help motivate you?

I'm thinking of focusing on different genres each month of the year . . . or alternating between them . . . or reading everything that I have from one author before I move on to another. The possibilities are practically endless! No matter what I plan, I know I'll need to leave some wobble room for new books, and new authors that will undoubtedly come to my attention next year.

Liz (busy91) My books will be based on the various challenges I'm in. Although I do read my own stuff in between.

I do know earlier in the year, I will probably read more health related books as I'm trying to get in shape (yet again). And in December it is a Christmas theme month.

I am also trying to dream up a challenge for myself. I've seen some cool ones around. I've done the 50 book & alpha book challenge. I want to create a unique one, but can't think of one that I would actually follow through on. So I'd just better stick to concentrating on getting to 75 books.

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 941 comments Liz, do u have a favourite genre? Cos you could read Alphabetical for the genres. Also you read Country initials (books that begin with Country letters).

message 5: by Liz (new)

Liz (busy91) My fav genre is the memoir/autobio
Although I can't read many of those back to back.

Countr initials? you mean like a book that starts with E for Europe?

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 941 comments R= Russia. But you could read a book that is to do with Russia/Russian Author.

United Kingdom, I would suggest Great Britain, Ireland, Scotland & Wales.

message 7: by Liz (new)

Liz (busy91) I had thought about that. Someone else on goodreads did that. The only problem is, am I really interested in reading X country? LOL! I'm honest with myself. :)

message 8: by Liz (new)

Liz (busy91) Or maybe....You gave me an idea.

I can read a memoir/auto from an author from different countries (maybe not all of them) but different ones.

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 941 comments What about places you have visited or wanna visit?

message 10: by Liz (new)

Liz (busy91) LOL! Never been of the eastern seaboard of the US. LOL!

Hmmm...places I want to visit. ALL of Europe.
That sounds like something interesting. :)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 941 comments Would u try a different genre for 2009?

message 12: by Liz (new)

Liz (busy91) Well I do read all genres, my fav is just memoir. I also read a lot of Sci-Fi (Star Trek books rock). I even discovered chic lit, which I thought I'd hate, but actually think is pretty cool. One genre I don't read is Urban Fiction, which is something I don't read because why read something I witness daily. :) Any other ideas? I've read Fantasy, Romance (not a fav), Mystery, Non-fiction.

message 15: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I don't usually have an organized plan. It's whatever tickles my fancy at the moment. I only read one book at a time, but when I'm done reading a book I want several choices. Therefore, when I check out from the library I make sure to pick up different genres.

These are actually sitting on my nightstand waiting to be read next year:

The Zahir by Paul Coelho
Johnathan Strange & Mr. Norell
A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray
Emma
Jane Eyre
