It's that time again! Time to nominate your books for the June 2012 Group Read! Please limit yourself to one book per person, and that book must have been written in the year 2000 or later, be a work of fiction, and be in your opinion a notable, even TOWERING work of literature. Nominations not conforming to this (self-promotion, for example) or books clearly falling under the heading of pulp (as judged by the mods) will not be included in the polls.

Then on June 8th, the nominations will close, and TWO polls will open for you to vote on: the first group read, and you will also be able to vote for the MOD group read. A week later, both polls will close, giving us all two weeks to get our hot little hands on the books in time to begin reading them on June 1st, 2012.

Please try to use the goodreads "add book/author" link above to link your book nomination, as sometimes there's multiple books of the same name, and it can be hard to tell what exactly you meant.

A book which has made our shortlist a few times now, nominated by 2-3 people over that time, shortlisted for the 2004 Man Booker, and winner of the IMPAC Dublin in 2006.

So far, I've had to delete two nominations from people trying to promote their own novels (both of which were genre fiction, by the way)

One nomination is currently being reviewed by the mods as a group to determine whether or not it meets the criteria for the group.

It's a rather complete set of instructions then.

I hope it's not mine that is being considered! ;) I don't know if it is a towering work of fiction as I haven't read it yet, but I do know it was awarded the Man Booker Prize 2011! So hopefully it is!

Yes but it's a fast read. The writing is excellent but not especially dense. And it's very, very funny, imho.

I second that!

sense of an ending has been nominated a few times before, it's fine to be so again. Books which are disallowed have their posts deleted, and if it's a beloved member who just picked the wrong book because it's any number of things like non-fiction, published/written in the wrong year, etc will get a message saying they can pick another book.

Members who just post their own book, after it's clear the book (and sadly often times the member) isn't attempting greatness, the post is deleted and NO message sent.

I'd like to nominate Turn of Mind by Alice LaPlante. Winner of the 2011 Wellcome Trust Book Prize.

I nominate The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt. In my opinion, it should have taken the Booker Prize last year.

I really enjoyed this one. I am not generally a fan of Westerns, but this was complex, character-driven, and totally satisfying...not to mention infused with a subtly dark humor.

Fascinatingly enough, there are several problems with this:

#1: the nominations closed weeks ago.
#2: The polls that followed the nominations even closed.
#3: This book was published BEFORE 2000, and thus isn't 21st century..
and last but not least:
#4: It's non-fiction.

So in around two weeks or so, we'll start nominating books for July 2012, but this book still can't be considered.
