Roberta (robertasametz) | 8 comments A group of tourists in Burma get lost or separated from the main group and encounter and live through some very strange and scary happenings among a long-forgotten group of local people living well off the beaten track. Mysterious and nerve-wracking. It is up in the air as to what will be their outcome. I think it came out within the last 10 years or less. Thanks for any leads.

Wyntrnoire | 17 comments It may be Dorothy Gilman's Incident at Badamya: "After Gen Ferris's missionary father commits suicide in 1950, it is up to her to get out of Burma alone. She has one hundred dollars in her knapsack, a slingshot, a magical Burmese puppet, and the New York City address of an aunt she doesn't know. But Gen is captured by Red Chinese forces and imprisoned with six other lost travelers. She vows to escape, not believing that her destiny lies in captivity, never dreaming of the forces that will finally come to her aid.... "

Brenda (brendaw) | 1 comments Could it be Saving Fish from Drowning by Amy Tan?

On an ill-fated art expedition into the southern Shan state of Burma, eleven Americans leave their Floating Island Resort for a Christmas-morning tour-and disappear. Through twists of fate, curses, and just plain human error, they find themselves deep in the jungle, where they encounter a tribe awaiting the return of the leader and the mythical book of wisdom that will protect them from the ravages and destruction of the Myanmar military regime.

Roberta (robertasametz) | 8 comments Thank you Wyntrnoire - that sounds like one I'd like to read. But you are so right Brenda - That is it. I've read all of Amy Tan's but I guess this one is somewhat different and I must not have associated it with her writing. This has been bothering me for quite a while now and I am so happy to have it so speedily resolved! Now I must go dig it up and re-read it. Thanks again.

Chris | 68 comments Saving Fish from Drowning is one of my favorite re- reads. Fabulous book- if people are having trouble getting into it I suggest starting when the tour group assembles. Go back and read the backstory later!
