Please read the rules for nominating BEFORE you create your post!! And check our bookshelves to be sure you are not nominating something we have already read as a group!

The categories going forward will remain as follows (based on your feedback):

Cat1- Regular Fiction/Non-Fiction
Cat2- Classics

In order for a novel to count as "Classic" it must be published pre-1980.

Please do not nominate a book more than once. A book can only be voted on once, so multiple nominations within this thread are not counted.

Only ONE nomination per person.
If you nominate a book for catagory 1, you CANNOT nominate a book for catagory 2, and visa versa.

Please be sure to post the title, author, and the catagory it belongs to.

Ideally, you can type it as follows -
Cat 1. Room - Emma Donoghue

If your post does not have those three things, it will not be counted.

Are you ready?

I will accept nominations through Monday evening. If we get tons of nominations, I may pull the plug on it a little early, so get them in as soon as you can!

Once I close nominations I will create the polls and let you know when it is time to vote!

Hit us with your best noms!

**Important note: At no time is it acceptable for an author to nominate one of his/her own books for the monthly group read. Likewise, it is not acceptable to "push" nominations or votes within this group. It also follows that "a nomination for a nomination" is not acceptable. If I suspect a push, or inappropriate actions have taken place within the group read nominations or votes, I reserve the right to deem those nominations or votes as ineligible.

Nominators beware!

I'm changing the rules for the group reads slightly!!

In order to nominate a book, you must be willing - should the book be voted in - to host the group discussion for the month.

Everyone loves to nominate books, and vote them in, but very few people actually participate in a discussion of it. So I'm thinking that if we actually HOST the discussion, we can get more participation that way!!

If you are nominating the book, typically you have either read it already or are very much wanting to read it, so it just makes sense to have you host the discussion throughout the month....

Are we cool with this change? I hope it breathes new life to the group reads and challenges us to think a little more critically as we read the books that are voted in as TNBBC group reads.

Plus it lets you, as the host, try out your moderator skills!!!

Wow.. 144 views and not one nomination yet.

Do we not want to host discussions?

message 4: by Bella (new)

Bella (muskratmom) | 2 comments Lori, is there a way to access the books the group has already read? I just joined and can only see new posts.

message 5: by Ethan (new)

Ethan | 1261 comments Cat. 1 The Lifeboat by Charlotte Rogan

Several other groups that I belong to require the nominator to lead the discussion. I personally see this as a great way to get involved in discussions. Why nominate a book if you are unwilling to discuss it? Anyway, thanks for everything you do for this group!

Anyway, on Cat2, I nominate H.G. WellsThe Time Machine

message 9: by Heather L (last edited May 18, 2012 07:57AM) (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) fivesunflowers: Please read the rules. You can only nominate ONE book, not two, and we have already read The Great Gatsby. You'll need to edit your post or Lori will not count it.

Bella: Click on "bookshelf" in upper righthand sidebar for books already discussed in the group.

Mirvan: Cat 1 does NOT have to be a GR author, but you should take note of Lori's "important note" in the rules.

Lori: I admit, while I have always read any book I have nominated that has won, I'm not a big fan of hosting--partly because I sometimes don't get to the book until middle or end of the month, and I know from experience how difficult it can be to try to lead a discussion for a book you haven't read (kudos to you that you do this so well!).

message 10: by Rosanna (new)

Rosanna (rosannabell) | 125 comments Cat 2: Dune by Frank Herbert. A Sci-Fi classic. I'm hosting this for my book club in person so I don't mind hosting it here as well. Should be fun :)

Heather - thanks for answering the questions up above. The only things I would add:

To Bella, if you are looking for the older posts, simply click on DISCUSSIONS in the upper hand side of the page to get a list of all threads within the group...

To Mirvan, no. I do not want to limit our group read selection to goodreads authors only. That also requires more work for me to verify that the book is truly from an author who has an account here. Sorry.

message 12: by Rayna (new)

Rayna (Poindextrix) (poindextrix) | 73 comments Cat 1: The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson.

I am a little hesitant with nominations because, like Heather, sometimes I don't get to the group reads until the middle of the month. Since I'm nominating this one I'd stay on top of it. I also own this one, so fingers crossed...

oh man, by asking nominators to host the discussion, i might have killed TNBBC's monthly group reads!

I just thought this would make the discussions more lively and get more people involved....

Ok guys, the polls are open. Go vote. You get one vote each category....

May the best books win, and hooray to our nominators, who were brave enough to step up to the plate and offer up a book that they would like to host for us!!!

It's not necessarily that people don't want to get involved. Some of us can't fill the obligation to host the discussion due to life, family, work, and/or school.

Sarah, that comment was made in jest.. haha.. I suppose it didn't translate well over the internet.

I'm not laying blame or shame, I was just really hoping to see a better turnout. God knows if I had the time, I would be able to read the books that were voted in and run the discussions myself :)

I'm just trying to find a way to make our discussions more lively and entice more of our members to read along with each other.

Oh no! We have a tie!!!

For category 1, we have a tie between The Lifeboat and The Gargoyle.

For category 2, the winning book is The Time Machine!

Let's get into a tie breaker and decide whether we read and discuss The Lifeboat or The Gargoyle.

Using this thread, post a comment on which book you would rather read. ONLY ONE COMMENT PER PERSON.

Sunday evening, I will count up the comments and the book with the most comments will become our next regular fiction read.
