This one was 4 stars for me. I liked the story, but I didn't think the actual writing was as good as a 5 star YA book. I enjoyed it a lot, though.

Strawberry Sunday (John Marshall Tanner #13) by Stephen Greenleaf

Strawberry Sunday was the 2000 Edgar Award Nominee for Best Novel

+ 10 Task (10.9 ice cream flavor : strawberry)
+ 15 Style: 1. Combo (5 points): (10.2 underrated, 20.2B Edgar Award, 20.6 Alliteration)

Task Total: 10 + 15 = 25

Review: Strawberry Sunday is a private detective mystery novel. Our hero is a crusty, unwed, middle-aged guy living in San Francisco. He befriends a young woman of Italian ancestory while recovering from gunshot wounds (presumably acquired in #12 of the series). She is associated with the Mexicans who pick the strawberry crop in farms located about 2 hours away from San Francisco. When she is murdered, our hero decides to find whodunit. Overall, a quick read, reminding me of those one-hour detective mystery shows so prevalent on television. Recommended for fans of private-eye detective novels.

I think I might be the person who first erroneously claimed "20.08 - Serially" combo points for this Not-a-Novel, before I finally got it through my head that 20.08 requires a novel. My apologies to the scorekeepers and other participants.

Review: This is a historical novel set in the 14th Century (after the “Great Mortality) in north Wales. The good characters are very good; the bad characters are very bad. This is NOT a finely nuanced character study (!). The attraction of this novel is the background detail of life in Wales in the 14th Century, a subject that the author has spent a lot of time learning about. Overall, a good read. Recommended for when you want to read a historical novel.

Elizabeth, even though it was listed in the Wikipedia list of epistolary works, it is not entirely told in letters. The story is supplemented by letters but does include narration and conversation between characters.

It's not for the points that I'm asking for verification on this, it's to make sure that I'm not losing my mind (which is altogether possible)...but now when I click the "Modernist Literature" link, Lorca is listed at the top of the second column.

Review: A town in an unnamed country (but clearly meant to be Norway) is invaded and conquered by soldiers (clearly meant to be the Nazis). Steinbeck wrote this novel during the early days of World War II to give hope to all the towns in Europe under occupation by the Nazis. He “shows not “tells how a free people can be occupied but not defeated. And, he does it in only 112 pages, resisting the temptation to pad and repeat and introduce besides-the-point subplots. Recommended to anyone who enjoys fiction, and particularly to those looking to read World War II fiction.

I'm so sorry, Deedee. This book is listed as YA Assignment at BPL but has no Lexile score. As such, it will not score any styles.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14074 comments Scoring issues involving 20.8 Serially, which requires the book claimed be a novel.

Previously we addressed those three members who read Travels with Charley and they already know about the scoring deduction.

In Post 562: Leigh who read The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. This is classified as a short story and does not qualify as a combo for 20.8. You claimed it for 20.9, so we'll just deduct the 5 combo points unless we hear from you differently that you want it applied to a different task.

Below, please let us know if you wish to adjust your posting for these books - since you claimed no combo points for these, it seems reasonable that you could put them on 10.1 Square Peg if you haven't claimed another book for that task.

Post 307: Ann, who read Dark Tower. This is a graphic novel and does not qualify for this task.

Post 358: Sara Grace who read Daytripper. Also a graphic novel and does not qualify for this task.

Post 537: Carolyn who read In Cold Blood. This is non-fiction and does not qualify for this task.
