William Mego (willmego) Like the title says, nominations are now open for the July open group read. Nominations must be for fiction, first published/written in the year 2000 or later, and should be something you consider a work of literature. *snip*

Doris | 1 comments The Bridge by Doug Marlette won the 2002 SIBA award.
The Bridge
This cartoonist/author wrote two incredible novels before he was tragically killed in a car accident. His friend Pat Conroy said at his funeral, "The first person to cry, when he heard about Doug's death, was God."

Oh dear, what was I thinking about!

Shooperdidooper The sense of an ending

message 19: by William (new)

William Mego (willmego) It's been nominated three times in 9 posts. All may safely consider Sense of an Ending nominated as hell.

message 20: by Allen (new)

Allen | 23 comments Will wrote: "It's been nominated three times in 9 posts. All may safely consider Sense of an Ending nominated as hell."

It's nominated in both polls, if I remember correctly, is that going to hurt the chances of it getting picked in either poll? I actually am wanting to read the book, so I was just curious how that would work out.

message 21: by William (new)

William Mego (willmego) I think we'll probably only allow it in one poll for exactly that reason, because some vote, then check and change their vote as the poll gets along (like me), and others vote once, and never change their votes, leading to some odd results. So I'll leave it in the moderators poll, as it was nominated there first, I believe.

I'm the oddball I guess. I didn't like the book. :-)

Sophia Roberts | 1324 comments Not at all Julie. I didn't like it either!

I second this - hilarious book.

Genevieve (genevievedeguzman) | 3 comments The Intuitionist by Colson Whitehead - Noirish, post-modern, features warring factions of elevator inspectors. Great book - let's do this one.

message 26: by William (new)

William Mego (willmego) @Genevieve - That looks like a really interesting book, and I've added it to my to-read list, but it was published in 1998, and is thus outside the scope of the group. You do, however, get to pick again!

message 27: by Regina (last edited Jun 08, 2012 08:09AM) (new)

Regina McCreary (soapygina) | 5 comments Sadly Barry Unsworth just died - a great loss to modern literature. Sacred Hunger suggested earlier doesn't qualify but the sequel "the Quality of Mercy" does or if we'd rather a standalone perhaps I'll nominate Land of Marvels?

message 28: by William (new)

William Mego (willmego) If you'd like to nominate something, just link it! You didn't really nominate something yet, and even if you did, you can always change it.

I must be equally odd because I didn't like it either!

message 30: by John (new)

John (johnnyfartpants) Under the Skin by Michel Faber is an interesting look at the world from a non-human perspective.

Love this book! It would definitely be a good choice, shame that it was published before the turn of the century.

One of my favorite books ever! Not an easy read, especially at first but as smart an allegory with as good a sense of mood as a person could ever hope for.
