Cheryl (cherylllr) I sometimes get the impression that newbies think that this forum is set up that they'll get notifications through PMs that people have been suggesting titles for their mystery.

(I belong to another email list-group that does do it that way. And besides, many of the UnSolved queries are posted by people who have no goodreads activity beyond their query.)

Shall we add to the HOW TO POST A FORGOTTEN BOOK instruction a more clear note that they have to stop back in and read the thread to get the suggestions?

LauraW (lauralynnwalsh) | 370 comments Yes. You might also want to change the instructions to indicate the exact format of a query, e.g.,
Topic: Genre, Important Details
[NOT Can't remember this book!!!]
Folder: Unsolved
Comment: Include probable date of publication; specific details; a warning if there is a major spoiler.

Additional info: it is your responsibility to monitor this thread for replies.

They will, if they click the "email me when people comment" link.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Cheryl, I think that's a great idea. The instructions could be as simple as what Rivka says in message 3.

I posted Rivka's suggestions and put it at the head of the General section. Let me know if there are any additional suggestions or changes for this.

Cheryl (cherylllr) (rivka, they'll get emails iff they click that box - but they won't get PMs at all)

Looks good Kate. Let's see if it helps. If not we might need to do a big old READ FIRST folder, stickied above General.

True, they'll get notifications, though.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Ok, this may not be the best place to ask this, but I've wondered - do folks who opt out of email notifications get notifications for PMs?

If so, then these folks who abandon their queries are behaving badly, not just ignorantly, no? I mean, I don't like to be harsh, but gosh.

(I have no idea, because I have chosen to get email for everything. :)

Everyone gets the same on-site notifications of inbox messages: the envelope darkens and gets a number.

If someone has not chosen to receive notifications of replies to their thread, they won't get anything, though. No email, no inbox message, no notification.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Ok, then they're only slightly more likely to notice that I've sent them a PM than they are to notice the thread has been updated. Iiuc.

So anyway, telling them to monitor the thread is a good idea. Maybe even telling them specifically to check that little box " Email me when people reply " would be better. I think.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Oh, and thank you for your patience. I don't mean to be dense, or to be rude.

LauraW (lauralynnwalsh) | 370 comments I think the new instructions are helping. A few of the newest postings are better formatted. Yay!

I didn't think you were being either. :)

Cheryl, I appreciate the PMs that you've been sending! We've gotten a couple responses back!
