Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments Dear moderators/founders, please forgive this one plug for the Around the USA in 52 Books group I have just created.

A few of us have been talking about this for a while, and I know I've been working on a list for months, so I thought I'd open it up for everyone. Don't let this distract you (too much) from your reading for this group; we're only halfway!

message 2: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) It looks interesting, Jenny. I think I may still be lost somewhere in the 52 countries I've selected for this group.

I may decide to do a smaller challenge for 2013 - the 12 provinces of Canada for instance. One book a month will leave room for all the other challenges I have on the go.

message 3: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments I would love to read more about and from the US. But I probably won't challenge myself to all 52. But who knows...I'm a bit crazy with the books.

Chieko (cminnow) | 18 comments Started a list but but will probably stretch it over two years. Keeping up with a book a week has stalled my knitting and gaming.

message 5: by Sylvia (last edited Jul 01, 2012 05:00AM) (new)

Sylvia (sylviahartstra) I will be thinking about it, but like Gaeta I want to continue my world travel to South America and Africa a bit more.
And there's another obstacle: books especially playing in the US aren't very much available in the Netherlands, so I would be forced to buy Kindle editions or audiobooks and that's what I can't afford.

Maude | 34 comments Jenny, You can count me in for the Around the USA in 52 Books for next year. That will be fun!

message 7: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) | 50 comments You know Jenny, I was thinking something similar would be fun. I even have the perfect book picked out for my home state- I got an anthology of short stories by Maryland writers for my birthday two or three years ago. I guess great minds think alike, huh?

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments Woohoo!

message 9: by mussolet (new)

mussolet (sovotchka) | 115 comments I've already started one myself. I might join you if I find more books to read though :).

Ooh, what's the name of the collection? I don't have a Maryland yet.

New Lines from the Old Line State

message 12: by Debbie (Doc) (new)

Debbie (Doc) Count me in as well.

message 13: by Susan (new)

Susan | 83 comments Me too! I kept telling myself that I was not going to do the USA as I am really enjoying the world and would like to continue with this .... then I looked at the pile of books surrounding me and realized that I read so much USA that I should be able to cover it without issue and maybe I should look at my own back yard so to speak....

The 12 provinces of Canada would be nice, too. I've been dying to see various parts of Canada, but can't afford it right now, so reading my way around Canada would be the next best thing.

message 15: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) I have several books set in Canada on my wishlist that it makes sense for me.

I like these challenges. One could do the continents of the world too.

Or centuries, and focus on historical fiction (or some better delineation like important periods). Or or or!!! Endless reading, endless world. Gotta love it.

If someone sponsored a Canada Provence reading group, I'd join!

message 17: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) I'll keep that in mind, Jenny. I'll revisit the idea in the fall. It's been a bit of a struggle to keep from doing the research and planning for it. But then, that's the best part! :)

message 18: by Sue (new)

Sue Then there are the countries of Europe vs Asia vs Africa vs the Middle East, etc. As you said Jenny "or, or, or". I may just keep reading my way around the world though there is just so much out there.

message 19: by Sue (new)

Sue Chelsea wrote: "Don't forget the states and territories of Australia!"

Absolutely, and I'd couple that with New Zealand.

message 20: by Diane (new)

Diane | 370 comments Don't forget Chinese provinces and Mexican states. The possibilities are endless!

message 21: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) | 50 comments British counties and the states and territories of New Zealand and Australia would be fun. ;)

message 22: by Louise (new)

Louise | 120 comments Oooh British counties sounds fun... And I've just finished my around the U.S. list! :-)

Wow, you are acting fast. I don't think I'm halfway through my list.

message 25: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) | 50 comments I created a group for those of us who want do something similar for Canada. I'd like to do Australia and New Zealand at some point too, but that might have to wait until 2014. http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/7...

message 26: by Betty (new)

Betty (olderthan18) I mentioned Mary Novik's Conceit in Jenny's "Around the USA 2013" group about The Imprinted Life's upcoming read and discussion. Mary's a group member at TIL, so the book discussion will be like an author visit.

The last great discussion was Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China. I'm inviting everybody to the Aug 20-Sep 19 discussion.

message 27: by Snoozie Suzie (new)

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 60 comments http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/7...

I have just started a read the British isles group. Come join me.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments Ack why are these all in the same year!?

message 29: by Snoozie Suzie (new)

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 60 comments I'm not planning on having a closing date... :-)

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) | 50 comments Jenny wrote: "Ack why are these all in the same year!?"

I know! That's why I was planning on waiting until 2014 to start or join another. I figured three similar challenges at the same time would a little much for me. Although if Snoozie Suzie's not planning on having a closing date, that could work for me, especially if I'm only going to being moderating one.

message 31: by Barbarac (new)

Barbarac (bcb72) | 191 comments Jenny,
I'm in for an USA challenge next year. While I'll still be reading from other countries, I've amassed a huge pile of great American books during this challenge, and I can't get to them until next year. It would be fun.

Woooooohoo. I'm going to keep a lot of challenges going in 2013, but I'm excited for this one for sure.

message 33: by Sue (new)

Sue I'm going to be reading and probably ticking off books read somewhat haphazardly along the way. I have so many thoughts on what I want to read next year. We'll see how it works for the U.S. Maybe I'll turn that into a multi-year event like the "52" international reading (for myself if no other). I think I'm going to ratchet back on all deadlines and rules next year.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments I know what you mean, Sue! I just keep adding books to my list to read because of all of you!

message 35: by Sue (new)

Sue Yes, we have so many friends who read so many good books!
