So what kind of pace do you want to set? Maybe a quarter of the book at a time with weekly discussions? Or would you rather a smaller amount of reading with daily discussions? I will start a thread for book suggestions tonight.

message 2: by Matt (new)

Matt McRoberts (nemesis0) | 404 comments Hmm well maybe at first come up with a list of a few books to choose from maybe unless you have some specific ones in mind you were wanting to do first.

Also when you say a quarter of the book how long are we getting to read it? A week? Couple days? If we do say a few chapters at a time we could probably do daily discussions that way depending on how much time everyone has to do the actual reading.

message 3: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
Yea that's what I was asking, if we did daily discusions on a couple chapters, or if we wanted to do a longer section and only have weekly discussions so people don't have to read a set amount every night. I would prefere to do a few chapters every day but I don't know what everyone else would want to do.

message 4: by Matt (new)

Matt McRoberts (nemesis0) | 404 comments Hmm yea, for me my reading time varies and i have several other books going so i may be up for the weekly discussions with chunks of a story then the daily one.

message 5: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
The only bad thing about a daily reading for me would be the weakends, I don't read much when I am not at work.

message 6: by Matt (new)

Matt McRoberts (nemesis0) | 404 comments Question, the group name says Horror and Thrillers so what kind of thrillers are you referring too? Any specific style of thriller? A thriller to me authors like Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, Eric Van Lustbader, stuff like that. Are you more interested in horror type thrillers?

message 7: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
I will read anything, I can even change the title if you guys want to get into something else. I just listed it that because its what I usually read.

message 8: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
Personally yes I am more into horror type thrillers though.

message 9: by Matt (new)

Matt McRoberts (nemesis0) | 404 comments Oh ok, wasn't sure if you wanted to keep this as a more horror novel centered group or not.

message 10: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
I figured it would get more members if I kept it specific.

message 11: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
It is listed as horror and thriller, whatever gets nominated and voted for I will read. That way people who only read romance novels know this probably isn't the group for them but its still kind of open to a larger sub genre of fiction than just horror itself.

message 12: by Johnny (new)

Johnny | 57 comments My reading time is very fickle, depends on so many outside factors. There are days I can read 50 to 100 pages, others when I hardly get to the bottom of 1. So I'll just join in as I see fit :)

message 13: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
Ok so a monthly book with weekly discussions sounds good to everyone? As long as we don't pick any epic novels it should be a nice slow pace.

message 14: by Mark (new)

Mark Turner Sounds good to me. Like Dany I'll read the group choice in between whatever else I'm reading.

message 15: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
I have another question for you, right now the group read poll is set up so you can see what is winning, how many votes each book has and who voted for what. Do you like that or should I make it all hidden until the poll ends?

message 16: by Matt (new)

Matt McRoberts (nemesis0) | 404 comments That works for me, gives an idea of which is gonna win and a better chance to be ready to have it when the new month comes.

Don't see why we'd need it to be a mystery really.

message 17: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
That's how I felt but figured I would ask.

message 18: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) I like to see the results. I am on a limited budget until I get a job. I look at the polls and put the books that are winning on hold at the library.

message 19: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
ok, i have been looking at other groups and trying to get ideas to make this one all it can be and i have another question. how do you all feel about themes for group read suggestions? example would be this months theme is zombies and voyage of the dead is a good nomination to be voted on. next month can be anything from mistaken/forgoten identity to coming of age tale to vampires to short story collection to authors debut novel etc..... would that make it more fun or do you like just suggesting whatever sounds good at the moment?

message 20: by Matt (new)

Matt McRoberts (nemesis0) | 404 comments It would work i guess, though i'm sure some months will be harder to find suggestions for then others.

I sure we can work out some criteria per month instead of just a bunch of random suggestions. Make things a little more orderly in the selection process.

message 21: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
one of the groups i am in does themes but half the time just says i couldnt think of a theme so suggest whatever.

message 22: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
we could always go themless unless someone asks for one. that way if someone is really in the mood for a certain type of book they could ask the group and as long as it sounds like most of us are ok with it we could just do it for that month.

message 23: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
ok one more question about how you want me to use my moderator super powers. i deleted the get this months group read free thread since it was a couple months ago and is no longer free, i want to keep things cleaned up and organized and i am debating if i should delete the group read suggestion threads for past months. would you guys like me to leave them to look back on or delete them after the poll go's up?

message 24: by Scott (new)

Scott (ttownscott) I'm in favor of pruning the threads, but in the case of the discussions for group reads I think you should keep them. I've gone back to the previous discussions from before I joined and have added some of those to my to-read list.

message 25: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
I wouldn't delete the group read discussions, I was just asking about the group read suggestion threads where you can request what books you want for the next month.

message 26: by Matt (new)

Matt McRoberts (nemesis0) | 404 comments I'm fine with removing the suggestion threads, not much point to them once the month has come and gone. Over time it'll all just become a lot of clutter in that section.

message 27: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
Thats what I was thinking but if anyone wants to keep them around I can always make another folder for them so they don't clutter the group read discussion threads.

message 28: by Johnny (new)

Johnny | 57 comments I would think that people's suggestions that didn't get chosen, they'll offer again the next month - I know I did! The way I see it, we'll probably get around to reading all suggestions sometime, so it's not like the titles would get lost or anything.

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
Another thing I was thinking about is that I know at least one other group I am in lets members add books to the shelf, what do you guys think about adding all the books that you think sound good as group reads to the groups 'to read' shelf? We could still suggest 2 books each and vote on but if you put a bunch of books you want to read up it would let the other members know what all you want to read. Who knows, there may be a book that all of us want to read but haven't suggested because it isn't the top of our list.

message 30: by Scott (new)

Scott (ttownscott) I think the group to-read shelf is a good alternative to keeping the suggestion thread for previous months.

message 31: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
If we do everybody can create a tag with there name to mark the book with when they add it and if a book you want to read was added by another member you can mark your tag on it also and we will see how many people want to read it. Example when I add a book to my to read shelf I also have the option to create a new shelf but its more of a tag or sub shelf because I still have to mark it read, to read, or currantly reading. But I can mark the book to read and also mark it horror and also mark it books I own, etc whatever I want to add. When I put a book on the shelf in the group shelf I will mark it to read and also Justin, if you also want to read it you just click on edit shelf and add your shelf to the book as well.

message 32: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
That could be a problem if we get more active members though and have to many shelfs to manage.

message 33: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
ok everybody you can now add books to the group shelf. i added all the suggestions for this month and made shelfs for the people who suggested them, i added the books to the person who suggested it and also the person who voted on it's shelf. just make shure you add books to the "to read" shelf only. i would like to have the groups "read" shelf only books that we have done a group read on. if you didnt suggest a book for this month you will need to create a shelf with your name because i only made them for the suggestions for next month. the name shelf's are more of a tag because you still have to choose read, to read, or currently reading. in addition to asking that you only add books to the to read shelf please dont add books to anyone elses name shelf. if you see a book someone else added that you would like to read click on edit shelfs and add it to your name shelf as well, it can be added to an unlimeted number of sub shelfs. if you have any questions just ask me.

message 34: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
if you want an example of what i did just click on the groups bookshelf and then to read and you can see what i already added. i will be deleting the suggestion threads this weakend so get what you need out of them before next monday. thats it, have fun and add some books!

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
So we have a tie between the uncertainty principle and the psych Ward killer with a whooping 2 votes each. Now what?

message 36: by Johnny (new)

Johnny | 57 comments What they do at Koontzland is, they open a new poll with only the two tied options, then members choose again. Of course this month the books were still tied, so now we read either or both of them.

message 37: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
Ok sounds good, everyone else ok with that?

message 38: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
Ok new poll up, since the most ratings for a book was 2 I also included the options for skip this month and everyone suggest 2 new books.

message 39: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
I should also note that I set it for 3 days this time, so get your votes in while you can.

message 40: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
how often should i broadcast a message to all members? when a new suggest a book for a group read is up, when the poll gos up, when the poll ends, all of these, never? i dont want people to feel harassed by constant messages but i want people to know when they can suggest and vote also.

message 41: by Matt (new)

Matt McRoberts (nemesis0) | 404 comments Well i figure the poll and maybe the suggestion thread just to remind people to do stuff on there. That'd really only be twice a month, which shouldn't be too much.

message 42: by Matt (new)

Matt McRoberts (nemesis0) | 404 comments Hey, i was thinking now that the group is a few months in for the "masthead" photo on the page we could make one with pics of the covers of the few books we've read so far. I made one for my group in a similar style, but with books by that author.

If anything i can make one up real quick if you'd like. All it'll take is getting image files of the book covers and pasting them together in paint or something.

message 43: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
That would be great Matt, whatever you come up with I would appreciate. Maybe time for ideas on a new group picture also just to change things up every once in a while. I thought about having somekind of logo making contest with a Amazon gift card for the prize but there are not alot of people in the group so it probably wouldn't get good results.

message 44: by Matt (new)

Matt McRoberts (nemesis0) | 404 comments Yea well i got one made up for the "masthead" thing with just most of the books (left out VOTD cause i ran out of room), but i figure as the group goes on we can change that to reflect more recent books we've read here.

Also a logo or something for the regular pic would be nice, that pic of my book shelf is a bit out of date now.

I will mess around with getting that up when I get home from work. Hopefully I don't have trouble doing it from my phone since the home computer died. Thanks Matt.

I'm not sure what the logo for this group should look like. The only image I can muster up when thinking paced horror is Jason voorhees slowly walking after his next victim.

message 47: by Matt (new)

Matt McRoberts (nemesis0) | 404 comments Well no rush on the masthead image thing. More of just an idea for something to do until a better idea comes along.

As for a logo, maybe a bleeding and/or burning book of some kind? Maybe a monster peering out from inside a book? I dunno, some ideas tho i dunno how we'd get them made...i'm a terrible drawer.

message 48: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
Well I tried to upload it and got this message

1 error prohibited this record from being saved:

Masthead photo is invalid. Photos must be between 1KB and 6MB and of type (jpg/jpeg/gif/png/tiff/tif) and at least 970px wide by 245px high

I will have to screw with it on a real computer instead of the phone. Unless you want to be made a moderator and help me with it.

message 49: by Matt (new)

Matt McRoberts (nemesis0) | 404 comments Whatever works for you. I can do it real quick if you want to make me a moderator at least long enough to do that.

I know it should fit the proper criteria. I made one for my other group and it worked fine.

message 50: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
I think it said 800 x 202 when I opened it in photo editor, I might be able to make it larger on my phone but it probably wont look as nice. I will play with it tomorrow
