I'm curious about the addition of the "picture book for children" folder. I'm not sure who added the folder, so I don't know whom to ask about why we would necessarily want to differentiate picture books from children's books.

The other question that arises is if we have this folder, should we go back through the children's books and move the picture books into this folder?

Thanks.

Just weighing in with my two cents: I don't think we need the extra folder, though I can certainly understand the reasoning behind someone adding it. But it's been my experience that many people outside of the library/education fields don't understand what we mean by "picture book" and often think it refers to a book without text.

Also,if we have 2 different folders, my librarian brain would want all the picture books moved (otherwise what's the point), and that sounds like a awful lot of work for someone. :)

Again, just my opinion.

Thanks, Andria, for weighing in. I'm going to leave this posted for a couple of days to give others a chance to add thoughts.

I also noticed that the Adult nonfiction folder was changed to be just "nonfiction." Again, we'd have to go back through all the children's and young-adult's shelves to move the nonfiction books. I'm not sure what the rationale is for the change.

Thanks,

Kate, I thought only mods could change folder labels. Can you as a mod see who made the changes?

Cheryl (cherylllr) I didn't do it. Nor do I think either change is appropriate at this stage. Maybe, back when the group was started, if a founder had realized how hugely popular the group would be, it would be nice to delineate folders further like this. But not now, unless the person who changed it wants to move all the books.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments We didn't even have folders until way after the mod created the group. It would be a tremendous amount of work to change things even more at this point.

Rebecca (liralin) | 198 comments That does seem like a lot if work, for no great reason. So far doesn't sound like anyone us clamoring for this change, so doesn't seem much point.

I'll send a message to Needleroozer and Ann aka Iftcan to check with them. Otherwise, I'll change these folders back, since it would be a lot of work to update and them, and as Rebecca says, it doesn't seem as though anyone is clamoring for the changes.

I don't think I did either of these. But I have no problems with going either way. I tend in my own sorting of personal books to have multiple checked categories since many books actually fit in multiple caetories. As an example from my shelves--Star Ka'Ats and the Plant People http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/... you can see how I classified it.

Do we use multiple classifications for things or just simple adult fiction/children's fiction etc? I haven't been a moderator long and hadn't really paid a great deal of attention to that particular angle as I think I've only put 1 or 2 books onto the shelf.

Cheryl (cherylllr) I've shelved a couple of books as both YA and Adult, but mostly I just follow the lead of the Quester.

(If I ran my personal shelves the way you do, I would probably shelve in multiples here more often. But I'm not habituated to that, so I don't.)

I think it's fine either way.

I also shelve books on more than one shelve, because some books are fluid. The have a message for more than one artificial designation of child -- young adult -- adult. Think of Hunger Games, which could be required reading on the ethics of some of our reality shows.

I think in the interest of simplicity, I'll erase the Picture Book designation, and I will make Nonfiction back into Adult Nonfiction. I'm comfortable leaving children's nonfiction in the children's section. The walls between the worlds are thinner there between what's real and what should be real.

Alas, it beyond my bedtime, and I'm typing off the cuff. I go to knit some raveled sleeves of care. No daggers

Cheryl (cherylllr) Despite your fatigue, you communicated clearly and wisely. Thank you.
