A fine detective novel. The detective is sane and not a drunk, so that runs against the tide of much detective fiction these days. The background to the murders, the tension between Belfast police and Dublin police, the deft writing, and the high stakes all make for a great read, if you happen to be a detective-fiction reader. I'll definitely keep up with the series.

An entertaining, engaging novel, with a broad historical sweep and an uncanny mixture of genres, including romance, gothic (vampires), historical. The writing is strong and vivid. The book is in many respects one immersed in the complicated intertwining of cultures and ethnicities in the American Southwest. I really enjoyed it.
