Steinbeck is preachy but not quite didactic. At times this saga dipped into details that felt more obscure or minutus than elucidating or contributory. Maybe that is art against economy and aesthetics versus ethics.

Great, now I can relate to someone other than the underground man. I¡¯m sure eight years of prison labor would do me good too. Then again, Ivan Denisovich¡¯s single day read like an obsessive nightmare, so maybe not. Maybe I will get a felony instead of a tattoo to affirm my outsider status and diminish my employability.
