Duncan’s place and past on the island is more settled than it was in the first of the series. Relationships and motivations were a little more developed and engaged me as a reader. The great strength was the management of the setting, conveying clearly the dangers and exigencies of weather and terrain.

A really useful summary of what we know about the early history of European textiles. While this may not satisfy a scholar, it is really useful for this member of an Embroiderer’s Guild, convening a group studying world embroidery. It answers several queries members have had as we dip into various aspects of the beginnings of embroidery. I can see us consulting it and following up on items from the bibliography.
