really liked it
Enjoyable to roll through a cast of characters that sweep across British society, but some of them felt underbaked (especially the Asian character who is killed off before he's barely introduced). I appreciate the scope and ambition, the steady decline of the main character who was singing too bright a tune at first and seemed to be dabbling in too many disparate fields. Stunningly excellent. I connected to these characters far more than Normal People or Beautiful World, Where Are You. The way that certain quirks unspooled and sometimes exploded later in the book - the way that things felt unexpected and shocking and yet totally believable - the way that the relationships felt genuine in their confusion, this book has achieved something powerful.
