Changing my review to 4 stars. This book has stuck with me since finishing it, and I keep thinking of various scenes and chapters. They are quite beautifully written. There is a plot that runs through-out but the book is also a collection of memories, interactions, and stories that are both relatable and illuminating.
To anyone interested in the series, I would definitely recommend reading The Hobbit before the main trilogy (duh). It is more of a children’s book than one may expect, yet still has all the charms of Tolkien’s world. One can easily imagine reading it aloud to enchanted young ears, as that is exactly how it’s written. Still a fun, brisk read and a necessary one to any LotR fan.
