I actually couldn’t put this book down. I was reading it while eating, cooking, etc. I just love the authors style of writing - it’s like reading a letter from a friend.
There are many themes in this novel: displacement (within oneself, within a marriage), depression, abuse, generational trauma, the immigrant experience, gender issues within a marriage, female empowerment, motherhood. I liked that the book was not overtly political.

This book excelled in descriptive language and imagery for the landscape, place and time. That’s the only reason why I kept reading all the way to the end.
The characters - not so much. It felt like I was reading the same thing over and over for 3/4 of the book. It started to get interesting at the end with the characters developing deeper below surface, but I wish it had that same pace throughout the book. It was interesting to read about the fol ...more
