Remember, every treasure comes with a price.

It's fun. It's easy to read. Is there much literary value to the book? Not really, but not every book needs to have it. Sometimes, you just need the escapism, and I sure love escaping into this world.

I like the varying POVs, as they give a complete picture of these people and the world they inhabit. The use of footnotes was clever, if at times unnecessary, and I appreciate how open-ended the book is ...more

Up to and including this book, the PJO/HOO series got better and better with each book that came out (we'll talk about all the ways Blood of Olympus let me down later). This book hit all the right marks for this series: action-packed, surprisingly heart-felt, high stakes, and included a satisfying conclusion. I will admit that the ending felt a little too easy, but it didn't annoy me as much as it probably should have.

I will admit that the ending felt a little too easy, but it didn't annoy me as much as it probably should have.

The thing that has always made these two series work for me is Percy. He's truly their heart and soul, and he's just so. damn. likable. I loved getting a peak behind the curtain of his goodness and morality in order to see his inner darkness. I'm glad Rick was willing to go there and address the lengths Percy would go through to keep himself and the ones he loves alive, and I'm glad that we got to see Percy be as scary as he is. It kind of sucks that it took him scaring Annabeth to really hit home just how terrifying Percy must be to those who oppose him, but the emotional payoff was so high. It's nice getting to see Percy get increasingly complex and layered as he gets older; it feels like a realistic portrayal of growing up and maturing, despite the completely unrealistic setting that brings them on.

These books are somewhat formulaic, plot-wise, but they've always struck me as more character-driven than plot-driven, so I don't mind. I'm still not huge on Piper and Jason, as they still feel like rip-offs of Percy and Annabeth, but that is decreasing as the series goes on. I adore Hazel and Frank, though the actual relationship seems forced, and it's so rewarding to FINALLY get an Annabeth point of view (seriously, why did it take seven books to get to this point???). I've always loved Leo, but that dramatically decreased after the whole thing with Calypso's island, which is a shame because he had so much potential that keeps getting wasted with his obsession with getting a girlfriend. HOH is really solid, and while it's still not totally obvious how we're getting from point A to point B, you can see things starting to fall into place for the final battle, which isn't something I think you could say in the previous three books.

However, it still really irritates me that they got rid of Percy's mark of Achilles or whatever it was called in the beginning of The Son of Neptune because it would've been SO INTERESTING to add that to this story line. Like, practically immortal demigod launched into Tartarus? Sign me up. But instead, we have a completely human demigod because GOD FORBID Jason be weaker than Percy. Let's just continue to tear Percy down in order to level the playing field between him and Jason because, even though we've made it abundantly clear that Percy is the most powerful demigod alive, HE CAN'T BE BETTER THAN A SON OF ZEUS OH NO.

Seriously, I think my biggest issue with this series (excluding literally everything about Blood of Olympus) is that so much of Percy is sacrificed in order to make him and Jason equal. Like the mark of Achilles. It was made out to be this huge, life-altering event in TLO, and it was erased with literally no consequences in SON, and in the end, it was because of this forced power struggle between Percy and Jason. It's nonsense. Percy LITERALLY DEFEATED KRONOS, but somehow that's on par with Jason fighting a lesser Titan at the same time? Sounds fake, but okay. I like Jason (despite the fact that he is clearly written to be a Roman Percy... which is dumb because Percy is Roman Percy), but it has always irritated me that Jason had to be as good as Percy even though Rick had made it IMPOSSIBLE because of everything Percy had actually done and accomplished. ...more
