This story is a curious intersection of two topics: the rise of newspaper reporting during America’s (specifically New York’s) so called “gilded age� and the feats of arctic exploration happening at this time. The intersection focuses on the zeal with with the newspapers pursued their “scoops� over one another, with the North Pole being viewed as a giant scoop. I had not read any of the previous novels where this character appears, but reviews of Holly said that this novel could be enjoyed stand-alone. Which is kind of true, however there are a lot of references to things that happened in the other books, and there’s some character development left out here as i assume it’s been done before.
