it was amazing
I love speculative fiction based on a simple, original premise that conjures up a world of questions about what everything is all about. Especially the “what if� kind - what if one day everyone in the world over age 22 got a box containing a string whose length told them how long they had to live? What would people do? What would societies do? Does anything we do matter if it’s all predetermined?

What a lovely book. It's yet another book about a small town bookstores and its quirky/curmudgeonly owner, a set piece I really don't much like. I've read two of Zevin's books now, and in both she creates characters who are almost but not quite believable. I can't call to mind all the well known novels that made famous all the different plot tropes she uses (although but it might be fun to try).
