Reading the Booker longlist.

Giving it 3 stars since I can't write a review without a star rating. I'd prefer to not have to rate it because I DNFd after about 50 pages.

This just wasn't for me. I didn't like how it was written, didn't care about the characters, wasn't interested in it in any way. Maybe if I knew anything about W Somerset Maughan and the events this book is about that would be different but I don't.

I'm not sure how this one came across my radar, but I'm always a sucker for "lost" dystopian novels (ask me about Katharine Burdekin's *Swastika Night* some time). After a couple of disappointing reads at the tail end of December I was hoping that this would close the year out on a high.
