i鈥檝e never read a novel that easily weaves the stories of four generations, their joys and their sufferings, so intricately and realistically as susan abulhawa did with her novel, mornings in jenin.

published in 2010, in 322 pages she wrote about life in jenin, palestine before the start of an seventy five year occupation, the rise of palestinian resistance, the 1982 war in lebanon and life during occupation, in palestine.

the story starts with yeh i鈥檝e never read a novel that easily weaves the stories of four generations, their joys and their sufferings, so intricately and realistically as susan abulhawa did with her novel, mornings in jenin.

the story starts with yehya abulheja before falling into the hands of his son and his wife, hasan abulheja and dalia. It was soon narrated by amal, their youngest child and only daughter. the voice of the story sometimes switching to their two sons, yousef abulheja and ismael abulheja - a boy who was torn from dalia鈥檚 arms as an infant and raised to eventually become part of the occupation army.

i loved this book. it made me laugh, it made me cry. abdulhawa has such a way with her words, and she captured my heart with them. to put it simply; i鈥檓 mesmerised.

i鈥檝e rated this book four stars, only because despite it being a beautiful work, I wasn鈥檛 happy with the representation of islam in this novel. abulhawa described the religion of islam as a 鈥渃ulture鈥� in many places. and there鈥檚 a particular line which piques at my disapproval - 鈥淥sama was there, hovering around Huda with yearning and hurried glances that seemed to ladle into our palms the sap of some secret between them, something caught and oppressed by the strict ways of a religious culture that would not permit him even a gentle kiss on her cheek.鈥� - and then there was yousef鈥檚 scandalous affair with fatima, which I won鈥檛 get into details with. yousef describes this as 鈥渉er sacrifice of culture, for love.鈥� I found that abdulhawa鈥檚 use of language incredibly wrong and misleading, especially to one that isn鈥檛 educated on islam. these are things I didn鈥檛 find anyone talking about in their reviews on this book, so I found it necessary to point it out myself.
