Now I know what happened (a natural death, but very young). But until I had that info, the mystery of that tragic week in late December 1970 felt like fiction. (less)

It's more of a conventional thriller in the sense of no hybrid structure, no long-ago past storyline. I've had a ball writing it, and it's partly based on a trip I made to Guatemala, so it's been fun bringing the setting and culture alive--especially during this COVID era, when we can't travel! Thanks for asking, and I apologize I never saw this question when it was first posted two months ago. (!) (less)

Workshopper Beware, an essay at Jane Friedman's blog

It's finally time to talk about writing workshops, the good, the bad, and the nuts. Literal nuts. Thanks for hosting this conversation, Jane Friedman!

My forthcoming novel, THE DEEPEST LAKE, is set at a memoir writing workshop. I've attended and taught workshops for twenty-plus years--which means I've seen a lot--but I hear new horror stories from other write Read more of this blog post »

“Since I was a very small boy, traveling from town to town, three hundred days a year, I learned to love this life. The cradlelike rock and sway of the train, the hospitality of our countrymen, the gentle hearts of our countrywomen. You will find that, as long as you keep moving, there is no end to the delights awaiting you. But you must keep moving, Feliu. Even when the heart skips; even when the view blurs.”
Andromeda Romano-Lax, The Spanish Bow

“A lot of well-meaning and important people take an interest in eugenics,â€ Father said, still maintaining that curiously even tone. “Roosevelt does. Alexander Graham Bell does.â€ “And Margaret Sanger,â€ Mother chipped in. “A number of progressives.”
Andromeda Romano-Lax, Behave

“Books have a unique way of stopping time in a particular moment and saying: Let’s not forget this.”
Dave Eggers
