J.H. Moncrieff's City of Ghosts won the 2018 Kindle Book Review Award for best Horror/Suspense.

Reviewers have described her work as early Gillian Flynn with a little Ray Bradbury and Stephen King thrown in for good measure.

She won Harlequin's search for “the next Gillian Flynn in 2016. Her first published novella, The Bear Who Wouldn’t Leave, was featured in Samhain’s Childhood Fears collection and stayed on its horror bestsellers list for over a year.

When not writing, she loves exploring the world's most haunted places, advocating for animal rights, and summoning her inner ninja in muay thai class.

Never any evil intentions there, but the bear in the book was inspired by an ugly panda that was my dad's when he was a kid.

It has a sneer on its face and is just as stiff and creepy as Edgar, minus the fangs. For some reason, I named it Wendy. My parents gave it to me, and it always made me nervous.(less)

Hi Patricia,

Samhain Publishing held a call, looking for novellas that dealt with childhood fears for a new anthology collection. That sounded fun to me, and I've always loved the classic haunted-toy trope, everything from the Twilight Zone's "Talking Tina" to Stephen King's "The Monkey." My dad had given me this hideous panda that used to be his when he was a kid, so that's where the initial idea for Edgar came from.

However, once I started to write, the characters had their own ideas. Josh said, "No, it wasn't my dad who gave me the bear...my dad's dead. It was my stepfather." And once he said that, the story got a whole lot darker than I ever imagined. I was actually afraid it would be too dark for Samhain, but then-editor Don D'Auria loved it, and the rest is history. It won the contest and ended up being my first published book.

Thanks for asking!(less)

“Yet, every day, I miss the feeling of flying. I will never experience it again. Sometimes, if I run far enough, past my limits, I can beat my legs into numbness, almost replicating the feeling of being a young gymnast on a good day. I can make myself feel numb but heavy. Never light. And I always feel the pain later. I pay the price with sore shins, aching ankles, and "hip pointers" jabbing into my pelvis.

Still, I have a love affair with gymnastics, with that period in my life. Often, I dream dreams of weightlessness. When I feel most disheartened, heavy with the burdens of everyday life, I imagine myself buoyant, floatable. I waft, on my own accord, propelled by my own volition, in effortless control. Completely powerful, resilient, substantial, agile.

I miss it every day.”
