Cindy Dees started flying airplanes while sitting in her dad’s lap at the age of three and got a pilot’s license before she got a driver’s license. At age fifteen, she dropped out of high school and left the horse farm in Michigan where she grew up to attend the University of Michigan.

After earning a degree in Russian and East European studies, she joined the U.S. Air Force and became the youngest female pilot in the history of the Air Force. She flew supersonic jets, VIP airlift and the “C-5 Galaxy, the world’s largest airplane. She also worked part-time gathering intelligence. During her military career, she traveled to forty countries on five continents, was detained by the KGB and East German secret police, she got shot at, flew in the

Much of this profession is learn-as-you-go. I still constantly read writing how-to books. There's no such thing as knowing it all, and it's easy to forget basics I once knew.

As for gaining readers, you earn them one at a time by writing one great book, then another, then another. That's the ONLY thing you have complete control of as a writer--putting out the best book you can. You have to trust the rest of your career growth to luck, word-of-mouth, and kind reviews. Sometimes lightning strikes fast, and sometimes it doesn't strike for a long time or at all.

Because of this intangible luck factor we all now rely on, that means you should probably write for the love of writing and not for the "reward" of fame, fortune, or success at the end of the process. In point of fact, that reward may never come. Even long-time authors with plenty of past success are having to come to this realization.

I blog about being a professional writer often on my website (and FB author feed), as well. I think it's important to pass forward lessons learned to other authors in the business. You can catch my other posts on this exact topic at .

And good luck to you!(less)

The rush of seeing characters I created come to life. Imagining crazy plots and making them work. Seeing the print book for the first time when that brown box arrives at your front door. Picking up your phone and seeing your agent's caller ID. Taking a great family vacation and knowing you paid for it. Fuzzy jammies as work clothes. Shall I go on?(less)

Romance Hook Tropes are here!

The book is almost 500 pages long, and that’s after I trimmed the introductory material from 70 pages to 20. It covers 33 tropes and hopefully includes a few you’ve been dying to play with in your writing. A complete list of tropes in the book is below. Happy writing and let me know what […]

“Love yourself, love life, and remember love may be waiting just around the corner for you.”
Cindy Dees, Deadly Valentine: An Anthology

“In fact, in her experience, the more honest a person seemed, the more dishonest they usually were.”
Cindy Dees, Hot Soldier's Chase

“Hey, English," she said softly. "Some hero you turned out to be. You know, you could've told me you were about to pass out down there in that tank. We'd have relieved you."
His eyes opened partway and he smiled up at her weakly. "Thought you'd go for the hero type. Wanted to impress you."
She reached up to smooth the damp hair off his forehead. "Oh, I'm impressed all right. Right down to my toes."
One corner of his mouth tilted up faintly. "Glad to hear it. I'm pretty impressed by you, too. Who'd have guessed? Women commandos..." His voice trailed off.
"Sleep now," she urged him quietly. "You and I are going to have all the time in the world to compare resumes once you're feeling better."
His eyelids cracked open a fraction, sluggishly, as if it was a tremendous effort to do so. "Promise?" he mumbled.
"Yeah. I promise.”
