She eventually graduated from film school, promptly decided she wanted nothing to do with filmmaking, returned to her original and impractical love of writing, and earned her MFA from New College of California. Her short work has been published in journals such as Kitchen Sink, Contrary, and Fiction. Amy currently lives in Oakland with her husband and two cats, and ...more

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS for non-fiction anthology about injustice and empowerment

The day after the election, I found myself barely able to move. I was catatonic with fear, shock, heartbreak, hopelessness. This project was born in the place just outside those shadows, when I gathered my strength and became determined to channel those feelings into action and hope.

I believe in the power of narrative. I believe the personal is profoundly political. I believe in our stories.

Do you

“What if I'm so broken I can never do something as basic as feed myself? Do you realize how twisted that is? It amazes me sometimes that humans still exist. We're just animals, after all. And how can an animal get so removed from nature that it loses the instinct to keep itself alive?”
Amy Reed, Clean

“What if talking about your feelings doesn't fix anything? What if what you really need is to make the feelings go away?”
Amy Reed, Crazy

“Imagine trying to live without air.
Now imagine something worse.”
Amy Reed, Clean

“You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children.”
Madeleine L'Engle

“BEAUTIFUL is stark, disquieting and, quite simply, riveting. Amy Reed is an author to keep on your radar.”
Ellen Hopkins

“A latter-day Go Ask Alice, BEAUTIFUL is raw, gritty, and powerful, an intense ice-pick jab to the heart. A stunning debut and a must-read.”
R.A. Nelson, Teach Me

“In crisp, clean prose Amy Reed places the reader right into the heart and mind and life of a girl who makes the choice to be one of the beautiful ones. Reed gives a disturbing and concise snapshot of what it can be like today for teens struggling with self-identity and peer acceptance when in a heartbeat they follow the 'wrong road.”
M. Sindy Felin, Touching Snow
