Emily Gray Tedrowe is the Chicago-based author of the novels The Talented Miss Farwell, Blue Stars, and Commuters. She earned a PhD in English literature from New York University, and a BA from Princeton University. She has received an Illinois Arts Council award as well as fellowships from the Ragdale Foundation, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the Sewanee Writers Conference. A frequent book reviewer for USA Today and other publications, Tedrowe also writes essays, interviews, and short stories.

Emily Gray Tedrowe Last night I finished a wonderful biography of Charles Dickens (by the master biographer Claire Tomalin), and while reading an account of one of his r鈥辞谤别Last night I finished a wonderful biography of Charles Dickens (by the master biographer Claire Tomalin), and while reading an account of one of his regular days -- working on Edwin Drood (his last, unfinished novel) I was struck by the fact that I get to do what the greatest writers in history have always done: sit down to a piece of paper and make up stories and characters. Something about that connection to the writers I have loved my whole life makes this work not just worthy to me, but special. (less)

How do you get inspired to write?

Some accounting

How much money do you spend on books per year? This is a delicate question. I鈥檓 both willing and unwilling to learn the truth in this matter. But I did a little (very little) number crunching. At this point on 12/10, I鈥檝e read 84 books over the course of 2021. Will probably get into the 90s, if not the big triple digit, by end of year. Of those 84, 18 were checked out from the library.
