I grew up in a D.C. suburb, and wanted to draw in a vague way from my own experiences of growing up in an east coast suburban area, but the trip to D.C. for the spelling bee needed to be special, so I had to put Eliza somewhere further flung. The Philly suburbs seemed a good fit, and I had a friend who grew up there so I was able to draw on her experience a little when I needed to make sure I had the details right.(less)
