“Bud Harris is a lantern on the path—clear-eyed, big-hearted, and illuminating.
Julia Cameron, author of The Artist’s Way

Bud Harris, PhD, is one of the most prolific Jungian authors of our time. He's authored and co-authored 15 books, and has been in the field of Jungian psychology for 30 years. At 82 years old, he has a long-standing practice in Asheville, North Carolina, which is still thriving.

Bud Harris defines himself as a husband, a father, grandfather, psychologist and Jungian analyst. Early in his life he earned a bachelor’s degree in management from Georgia Tech in Atlanta Georgia. After Tech, Bud became a businessman and then owned his own business which he operated successfully. However, in spite of his achievements, he found h

Then some time around midlife I finally began to hear the idea that if you don’t or can’t love yourself, what you do for your neighbor may not turn out to be all that great. I also realized that many people accused me of being selfish when I wasn’t doing what they wanted me to or when I wasn’t fulfilling their expectations. As I decided to look into selfishness more carefully I defined “sickly selfishness as the kind of selfishness that is egotistical self-centered behavior that is demanding and exploitive of others. On the other hand, I defined sacred selfishness as just the opposite. Sacred selfishness means making the commitment to become a person of depth, and substance whose very presence brings life and vitality to the people around them. Sacred selfishness is based on increasing self-knowledge and our engagement in life which will give us the foundation for truly loving ourselves, our lives and other people. (less)

Video: Reclaiming the Heart of Masculinity

We live in a time of dramatic challenges when the life-giving, life-affirming spirit of masculinity is desperately needed. In this lecture I cut through the confusion surrounding masculine issues by exploring the potentials, satisfactions, and responsibilities of being a man from their archetypal roots.

“It takes more than just awareness for us to change. It takes courage and humility and the willingness to occasionally feel like fools and laugh at ourselves.”
Bud Harris, Sacred Selfishness: A Guide to Living a Life of Substance

“It takes courage to dream, to face our futures and the limiting forces within us. It takes courage to be determined that, as we slow down physically, we are going to grow even more psychologically and spiritually. Courage, the philosopher Aristotle taught us, is the most important of all the virtues, because without it we can’t practice any of the others. Courage is the nearest star that can guide our growth. Maya Angelou said we must be courageous about facing and exploring our personal histories. We must find the courage to care and to create internally, as well as externally, and as she said, we need the courage “to create ourselves daily as Christians, as Jews, as Muslims, as thinking, caring, laughing, loving human beings.”

“When Dr. Jung said we must be able to look forward in old age to the next day and to look forward to the great adventure that is ahead, he was making life’s “imperative to grow personal. As long as we are alive, we must be able to dream of the future, of a better world or better ways of life. We are also invited by our greater Self to dream new dreams of creativity and fresh ways of expressing ourselves, as many great artists have into their nineties.”
