Mary I or Mary Tudor, queen from 1553 of England and Ireland, reestablished Roman Catholicism in 1555; her persecution of Protestants earned her the "bloody" nickname.

English scholar Roger Ascham as her Latin secretary advocated the use of the vernacular in literature.

Elizabeth I succeeded her from 1558 as queen of England and Ireland.
