John 15:5-6

For some people John 3:16 encapsulates the entire message of the Gospel. For me, it’s John 15:5-6. That’s why I keep coming back to it so often. People who get this verse, and apply it, live the abundant Christian life that Christ promised.

I believe all of our downfalls and shortcoming can be accredited to being disconnected from the Vine. When we allow other things to get in the way of the disciplines that keep us connected to the Vine, that’s when all manner of corruption pops up and invades our lives.

As a recovered alcoholic/addict, I don’t wake up every morning and tell myself, “I’m not going to smoke pot, (yes, pot is addictive), I’m not going to drink today, I’m not going to pop any pills today. I spend zero time telling myself any of that stuff.

Rather, before I get out of bed, I pray. Mostly for other people, but I also to ask for strength. Then I listen to worship music while I stretch. Then I do the most important thing that I’ll do all day. I read my Bible. These are the three disciplines that keep me firmly connected to the Vine. By doing these thing, I have the life blood of the Vine, the Holy Spirit coursing through my veins. As I’m filled with the Spirit, my life naturally produces fruit.

Do I still sin? Of course I do! But, I sin a lot less than I did when I was totally disconnected from the Vine. Back then, I walked in darkness. Now, my life is characterized by the Light of Life, and I make a conscious effort to walk in that Light daily.

Folks, that’s the Gospel. Over and over, the Bible tells us that those who continue to willfully live in sin have no part with God. The answer isn’t forcing yourself to be a better person. The answer is to spend time getting connected to the Vine everyday, and then just letting nature take it’s course as the Spirit bears fruit in your life.

Jesus said, “what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world yet loses his own soul?â€� Prepper translation: “What good will it do you to survive the coming economic collapse, nuclear war, or even a zombie apocalypse if you don’t know you will go to heaven when you die.â€� A recent study found that 10 out of 10 people die! On that day we will meet our Maker. It only makes sense to be prepared for that day.Ìý.

Even though most of the cool dystopian TV shows and movies are usually too filled with vulgar language and sex for my family to enjoy, I still always notice the trailers. YouTube Red has a new dystopian series coming out called The Thinning. The premise of the show is that resources are too tight and that the world only has enough to support the best and the brightest. Of course the obvious globalist spin is apparent, the earth is over populated, we’re harming precious mother earth by breathing, yada yada yada.

But, Agenda 2030 propaganda aside, is it really a dystopian show to begin with? The children in the show have the opportunity to prove their worth in the world of tomorrow via excelling in school and through standardized testing before being thinned out, or euthanized.

Now think of that show as it contrasts to our present reality.ÌýImagine if the 3,288 children murdered in abortion mills today had the opportunity to go to school, score high on a test and win the opportunity to live! Heck, even for the children that get thinned out in YouTube’s series, they get to experience 17 glorious years of life before they’re effectively aborted. They get to have friends, eat ice cream, be loved by their parents, and watch dystopian classics like The Hunger Games. Compared to present-day America, The Thinning is a utopic dreamland. We’re the ones living in a dystopian nightmare!

So how did we get to a place where our reality is much worse than what’s portrayed as dystopic on television?

To borrow a quote from Edmond Burke, the only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. We’ve had a lot of that over the past 4 decades, and brother, evil is running the show.

I understand that people are busy, but if you can’t find time to write an email to your congressman, to support or bring to the floor HR 586, aka the Sanctity of Life bill, then stay home from church one Sunday a month and do it. Write your Senator, and President Trump asking them to sponsor similar bills.

When God is pouring out his list of complaints against Israel in Isaiah 1, he tells them that he takes no pleasure in their meaningless worship.

He says: Bring no more futile sacrifices;ÌýIncense is an abomination to Me.ÌýThe New Moons, the Sabbaths, and the calling of assemblies—I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting.ÌýYour New Moons and your appointed feasts, My soul hates;ÌýThey are a trouble to Me,ÌýI am weary of bearing them.

When you spread out your hands,ÌýI will hide My eyes from you;ÌýEven though you make many prayers,ÌýI will not hear.ÌýYour hands are full of blood.

Our hands are filled; the Church in America’s hands are filled with blood.

Sitting and listening to some guy drone on for an hour, even singing at the top of your lungs, all of that stuff doesn’t matter if your heart doesn’t break for the things that break the heart of God.

ÌýFor you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.

Today’s section of scripture is heavy! There’s probably a hundred good Bible studies on these few verses, but the most obvious one is the lesson of Esau. If you remember, Esau sold his birthright to his brother Jacob for a measly bowl of soup. “How stupid,� you might say. Yet we do the same thing everyday. Just like Esau, we put the immediate wants and needs of our flesh ahead of our heavenly birthright.

Paul* compares Esau’s lack of respect for his birthright to profaneness and fornication and points out that Esau stepped over the line. He somehow crossed a point of no coming back. That’s scary, especially in the context of the other verses. It certainly makes me think twice before giving into the flesh and selling my eternal birthright for a momentary pleasure that is more fleeting than this world. I suspect many people who thought they had a ticket to the resurrection will be seeking one diligently with tears, but it will be too late.

So, let’s take Paul’s advice and pursue peace and holiness while we still have the breath God gave us.
