Gold Coast Supanova is nearly here!

My first event of 2025 will be Gold Coast Supanova and it’s now under a month away. It’s on the weekend of 13-14th April, to be exact. :-)

Events like Supanova are always a lot of fun. I get to dress as one of my characters, sit at a table with two good friends who are also authors, and meet and greet a lot of amazing people who are usually wearing their own sensational costumes. We’ve been so many times now that there are attendees we recognise instantly and love catching up with. It’s always great to see them again.

This will be the first Gold Coast Supanova for my new novel, Keeper of the Archives, and the steam punk/dystopian anthology Stepping Sideways. I’m looking forward to showing them to the Gold Coast crowd and giving them a story set in the new world I’ve created. I’m currently working on another standalone story in the same world as Keeper of the Archives. It will be sort of a prequel and I’m hoping to have the first draft completed in the first half of this year. That means it’s still a while off before there’s any hope of it being released, but I do have some other irons in the fire that I hope I’ll be able to tell you about soon.

So if you live on or near the Gold Coast and you’ve never been to Supanova, check it out. You can find out more on their website . If you’re a Gold Coast Supanova regular, come and say hello to Adele Jones, Jeanette O’Hagan and me at the Rendered Realms stand. I can’t wait to meet you!

Making progress

It’s nearly the end of February and I’m busy, busy, busy!

I’m doing lots of editing and have also booked some events for the year. I will be at , and . I’ll let you know more events as they come to hand. I hope to see you at one or more of them!

Writing’s been a little trickier, although I did finish a short story for an anthology and a novelette. The prequel to Keeper of the Archives is continuing to plague me, though. Writing it is like pulling teeth. I don’t think a first draft has ever taken this long before.

Never mind. I’ll keep struggling on and hopefully the next time I get a moment to write another blog, I might have made some more progress.

Ready for 2025!

Last year was insanely busy for me. I had two new releases one a full-length novel (Keeper of the Archives), the other a short story anthology (Stepping Sideways). I also edited a plethora of manuscripts for other authors, wrote as often as I could (which wasn’t very often by the end of the year!) and attended a lot of events.

What’s 2025 looking like so far? There aren’t as many events at this stage, although that can change quickly. I have already been helping a lot of authors get their manuscripts in order and I’m trying to find time to work on a prequel to Keeper of the Archives. I have also written a short story for another anthology that I’ll talk more about later in the year, as well as a contemporary novelette.

So I’ve hit the ground running and am hoping for more big things this year. If you have an event planned that you’d like me to attend, please let me know by sending an email to [email protected]. If you want to know more about any of my books, click . If you want me to edit your manuscript, fill out the . I’m hoping to meet lots of challenges and have a great year, and I hope you do too!

Two new titles and a busy schedule

It’s been a busy second half of the year, so much so that all the posts I intended to put up about the release of Keeper of the Archives were shelved. I was simply too busy to write them.

So here we are, at the end of the year. Keeper is out and so is the Stepping Sideways anthology. This is an anthology of short stories by different authors set in either steampunk or dystopian worlds. It was a lot of fun to be both a contributing author and an editor in this anthology and I love the different stories that were included. You can read more about it on my website .

As yet, I only have a few events pencilled in for 2025 but the details will be up soon. I hope the next year holds some good things like a completed manuscript and a lot more opportunities to meet new people who love books like I do. One of the best things about being an author is having the opportunity to meet people who love to explore the worlds in books. It’s one of the best aspects about attending any event.

And Keeper of the Archives is getting a good reception. So far the reviews have all been positive and I’ve had some encouraging sales. It’s been nice to see it doing well. You can read more about the book on my website . I intend to write another book set in the same world if I can find the time! I started a draft but was swamped with editing work so as yet haven’t had the chance to get back to it. Hopefully I will over Christmas when I have a much-needed break.

I’m hoping to post again before Christmas, but judging from the last few months, that plan may change. So just in case, I’d like to wish you all the best over the holiday season.

New website, new book, new WIP

I have been giving my website a facelift for the past couple of months and I think it might finally be working! This is my first blog in the new format and I’m hoping if you’re looking at this on the site that it’s working okay for you. If something’s going wrong, let me know. I’ll grumble but I’ll do my best to fix it.

I am getting excited about Keeper of the Archives, my new book, which will be out in just over a month. You can read more about it . I can’t wait for everyone to read it. I will be having a face-to-face book launch for the first time since before the pandemic, so if you’re a Brisbane local or live nearby, watch my page for more details.

I have also started writing a new book called Terror in Twin City. It’s set in the same world as Keeper, but about 30 years earlier. I had been writing a sequel called Father of the Horde, but while doing that, I encountered a wonderful new character who really needs her story told first. I’ll see how I go but it’s fun so far!

So please, look around the website, check out my other posts, my books, my editing page. Bookmark or even pre-order Keeper of the Archives. If you do that, I’ll definitely give you a thumbs up! :-)

Why I Write

When you’re an unknown author, it can be difficult to make sales. This can definitely make me feel like giving up at times.

Another blogger, Elle Griffin, recently put up a post called ‘No one buys books, which you can read . In it, she quoted statistics that both depress me and make me hopeful.

For a start, most books don’t even sell 1000 copies. According to publishers, 90% of books never sell more than 2000 copies and 50% sell fewer than a dozen copies.

Happily, none of my books are in the 50% bracket, so that’s a plus, and it’s nice to know that I’m not the only author who struggles with sales; even those with big publishers do. But at times like this, I wonder why I keep going.

One reason is because of weekends like the recent Gold Coast Supanova. I sold well there, at a table with my fellow Indie authors, Jeanette O’Hagan and Adele Jones. We all had encouraging sales, including one girl who swept by and bought a copy of just about every book on our table. It was wonderful to see someone who not only enjoyed reading, but prioritised going to events like Supanova and buying from unknown authors. It does so much for the morale of the tiny fish in this big pond when we meet people like that.

Another reason is that I can stop writing, so I guess stories will continue to come out. I’m getting ready for the release of Keeper of the Archives in September and hoping it will do well. Perhaps it will be my best release yet! I hope so.

Writing, Preparing, Finalising

March has been a big month. I have continued work on Father of the Horde, my WIP, and am now almost at the 25,000 word mark. I have finalised the typeset version of Keeper of the Archives with my publisher, with it scheduled for release in September.

I will also be attending Gold Coast Supanova on 13 and 14 April with my fellow authors, Jeanette O’Hagan and Adele Jones. You can find us at the Rendered Realms stand. We will also be at the FraserPop Festival in Maryborough on 13 and 14 July and are looking at some other events as well. Make sure to check my events page if you want to know more.

I’m also happy to share with you the cover of Keeper of the Archives. I can’t wait for it to be released!

New year, new story

It’s taken almost two months of 2024 for me to find the time to write my first blog post. Ever since I returned to work after my holiday, I have been busy helping people by editing their books. It’s great to see so many trying to get their stories out there. :-)

Keeper of the Archives is nearly typeset and will soon go to print. It’s scheduled for release in September (not July as I previously said). The dystopian/steam punk short story anthology I have been editing with Emily Larkin should be out at about the same time. It’s now called Stepping Sideways, and I can’t wait for you to read the fabulous collection of stories we’ve been working on.

And yesterday, for the first time in a long time, I sat down and wrote the beginnings of a new novel. It’s set in the same world as Keeper of the Archives and its working title is Father of the Horde. I have only a few strands of story at the moment so I have no idea if I will even get a full novel out of it, but I thought the same with Keeper at one stage, so I’ll have to hope my imaginations kicks in and does its job.

I’m looking forward to great things in 2024!

Keeper of the Archives tells the story of Eden Fittell, a girl who works
in the government Archives in Sendirian City, where an crime boss
regularly snatches government workers off the street to experiment on.

Another year over

And here we are again. It’s just about time to say goodbye to 2023. As I prepare for the Christmas season, I’m reflecting on the year that has just passed and what experiences I’ve had.

I’ve had the joy of having another book accepted for publication. Keeper of the Archives should be released in July 2024. Woohoo!

I had the satisfaction of being able to re-release the Verindon trilogy as an omnibus edition, which allowed me to spruce it up a little in the process. All new versions of the ebooks are now available. You can find the links to the ebook of The Heir . The omnibus will be available in paperback on Amazon in the new year. I have copies now, if you need any.

I had the fun of spending some time at events like ComicCon and Supanova. Brisbane Supanova this year was special, as I shared my usual table with my friends, Jeanette O’Hagan and Adele Jones, and we all made excellent sales. I love it when that happens!

So now we’re nearly ready for 2024. I hope it will bring great things for you and that you will enjoy the holiday season.

God bless us, everyone!

Busy, busy, busy!

There’s so much going on at the moment, which is great. I like to be busy. :-)

After Oz ComicCon in Brisbane in September, which we really enjoyed, I started work at a new round of edits on Keeper of the Archives, my new book, which will be out in July 2024. I’m still working on it and think it’s nearly ready to send back to my publisher. I have also been editing a short story I wrote for Diverging Worlds, a short story anthology I’m editing with Emily Larkin. We’ve started editing some stories from other authors for the anthology and have been impressed by the submissions.

I’m also doing quite a bit of editing for other people at the moment. For those of you who don’t know, I am a professional editor as well as an author. You can read more about my editing on my website, . I enjoy seeing what other people are writing, especially considering the diverse manuscripts I work on. I have recently edited a post-apocalyptic thriller, some children’s early readers and some song lyrics.

I have two events coming up in November a bookfest in Bethania, which you can read about , and also Brisbane Supanova. Tickets are already available. You can buy them .

Then it will be Christmas before we know it and another year will be gone. I’m looking forward to 2024!
