NaNoWriMo 2017

I'm giving NaNoWriMo a try this year, working toward 50,000 words in a brand new story. It's day two and so far I feel pretty good, but I'm trying not to get ahead of myself because I still have 28 days to go (and 45,985 words still to write).

I'm not known for being a fast writer. I've been working on a story for a few years now and it's still not done. So this "write a first draft in thirty days" thing is crazy to me. My hope is that by doing it fast, my overactive judge-y brain won't get in...

You are here (on Mother's Day).

I'm a mom. I love being a mom. I'm certainly not the best mom, but I don't absolutely suck either. So I've got that going for me.

Daughter has been asking me to listen to the original cast recording of Dear Evan Hansen, a fabulous musical with nine Tony nominations this year, since she first heard it way back at the beginning of the year. And it isn't that I haven't wanted to oblige, but that I didn't have the time to truly devote to listening to it. That is, until this week.

Let's just say tha...

FJHS We the People Appreciation Giveaway

I've been doing a lot of talking about the lately. If you've had a conversation with me since December 13, when the team won the Indiana Middle Grade We the People state competition, I guarantee, you've heard me talk about these teens and how much I admire and love them.

So I like to think this giveaway is a nice way to say thank you to everyone who has listened to my stories about the team, donated to the team, and shared the team's fundraising campaign....

Multi-Author Event at Barnes & Noble in Carmel, Saturday, 3/4, 1-5 PM

A lot of books have come out lately, and I've desperately wanted to get my grabby hands on them, but I've been waiting. It's hard to do. Not at all easy. But I've been waiting so I can buy all my books at the FJHS We the People Book Fair fundraiser this Saturday, March 4, at the .

My thinking is this. Yes, my wallet will cry and gnash its teeth as I empty it at the register to pay for my giant stack of books, BUT!!! I am doing a good thing! I am buying books for a grea...

FJHS We the People go to Washington, D.C.

Don't stop believing! Hold on to that fee-ee-ee-ee-eeling!

Journey has been on a loop in my head for nearly a month now. And it's glorious!

I tried to explain in a what We the People is and what it has meant to my family.

To sum up: We the People is an awesome civics course and competition that engages students in real life learning and critical thinking. And it's kind of the most important thing to happen to our family this year.

On December 13, 2016, we traveled through slush...

What I Learned from We the People

Today I got a glimpse into America's future.

Everyone take a deep, calming breath.

There's a new breed of citizen coming soon. Thoughtful, informed, compassionate, passionate, and unbiased—this new breed is what we all should be striving to be.

Basically, I realized every adult should try really, crazy hard to be like my eighth grade daughter and her We the People classmates (aka Weoples).

Seriously.

I'm not joking. I know I usually joke around. But this is for real.

Be like Weoples.

Today I attende...

5 Ways to Find Your Next Book

The theme for Teen Read Week this year is "Read for the fun of it!"

This seems like a no brainer for me. Reading has always been fun (except that time I had to read Billy Budd by Herman Melville—that was torture because that Melville just droned on and on. About what? I can't even say because I slipped into a comatose state by the third paragraph).

But I'd pick reading a good book over going to a party EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

So, it breaks my bookish heart when I hear people say they hate reading....

National Coming Out Day and LBGTQ+ YA Books

Today isÌý, a special day for the LBGTQ+ community and its allies. A day to stand and be counted. A day to be strong and kind. A day to recognize love and courage. A day to remember how far the LBGTQ+ community has come and to stare down the path that lies ahead with conviction and compassion.

It's a day to support each other. To make sure no one feels alone.

Teens in the LBGTQ+ community often feel isolated. They are at higher risk for mental illnesses like depressio...
