Times Have Changed
In the past two years with the explosion of ebooks and the decrease in sales of print books, the publishing world has changed drastically. Over 1.5 million books were published in 2011 and that includes the self published books.
Book sellers have been forced to look at self publishing in a new and different way. Many have realized they can no longer discriminate against authors if they have not been published by a "big house".
An international meeting of the top publishing houses was held in the UK in 2011 regarding ebooks and they too realized they would be forced to embrace the wave of change.
Some authors have reported their discouragement regarding ebooks and their availability to "almost anyone" to publish. Serious authors work very hard to turn out quality work where each word carries its own meaning and stands on its own to create a quality writing.
However we too must swing with the changes (thanks to the Internet) which has its good and its bad points. Authors who are serious about their writing probably will not give up in the overcrowded literary jungle.
Eat,Pray,Love had big money behind it for promotion but The Help received around 52 one star reviews before it took off.
So though it may be discouraging sometimes, I believe that those of us who believe in our writing will keep our faith in ourselves and in our writing.
Best to all,
