Training to Walk the Half Marathon. Again.

Those of you who follow my blog know that my friend Sue Palmer, my husband Al Cratty, and I walked the Eugene half marathon two years ago. I had to train for it. my experience.

What happened after that is the real story. My blood pressure plummeted and stayed low for six months. I walked everywhere instead of driving or taking the bus. It’s nothing today, two years later, for me to walk four miles, and I do it frequently. When alone, it’s kind of a meditation. When with a companion, it’s a good time to chat and catch up.

I also wore out my Hokas (shoes). The guy at the shoe store said they’re good for about 500 miles, and that’s about right. Bought a new pair immediately.

Last year I was out of town during the training/marathon period, so I didn’t participate, but I have kept walking. This year I’m not (yet) committed to doing all that needs to be done to actually walk the official marathon in April, mostly because my training/marathon partner is likely to run half of it, and running is not for me. But I’ll do it on my own, starting Monday (love that the first day is a day of rest). I’ll stick to the training schedule and I will be happy to walk 13.1 miles at the end of it.

I repeat: when I turned 70, my doctor said, “You’re 70. It’s time to start walking. She was right then, and she is still right. Recommended advice. Five stars.
